JDRF Hawaii Community Partnership

JDRF Hawaii Community Partnership JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970.

In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF:

To remove the misconception that T1D is only a childhood disease
To acknowledge that nearly 85 percent of people living with the disease are over age 18
To reinforce our commitment to funding research that improves life for people at all ages and all stages of the disease.

CD3 is a blood marker that helps to activate the immune cells—called T cells—which are thought to be responsible for the disease."

"Cigna's newly announced Express Scripts program to reduce out-of-pocket costs for insulin is a step in the right direction. It is unconscionable for anyone to struggle to access insulin, and through our campaign, JDRF has long advocated for health plans to implement policies that make insulin more affordable, including practical solutions to improve coverage and lower out-of-pocket costs, so all who need it can access this life-saving drug. We are encouraged by Cigna taking this action and urge them to implement this program without delay. We also encourage eligible employers to opt into this program."

Aaron Kowalski, PhD, JDRF Chief Mission Officer

Cigna and Express Scripts on Wednesday announced a plan to cap out-of-pocket insulin costs at $25 for a 30-day supply for eligible plan members with diabetes, according to a press release from the companies. The Patient Assurance Program will be available to members in participating non-government f...

This week, JDRF's Chief Mission Officer Aaron Kowalski testified before the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations on the Committee on Energy and Commerce. The hearing was entitled "Priced Out of a Lifesaving Drug: The Human Impact of Rising Insulin Costs"

"Right now, our system is failing people with diabetes. We need systemic change, change that Congress can help make happen.

A recent study from Yale found up to 25 percent of people with diabetes are actually taking less insulin than what they need, just to save on costs.

No one should suffer or die because they cannot access insulin."

Researchers are working hard to convert the body’s alpha and delta cells into beta cells. What would that mean for type 1 diabetes? It could drive increased insulin production, leading to new ways to cure, prevent or treat T1D. Learn about the behind beta cell regeneration and results of a recent JDRF-funded study: http://ow.ly/mAZH30mGUIw

JDRF-funded researchers wanted to access the alpha cells and find out why they weren’t converting all the way into beta cells after turning on insulin. They found that cells increased expression of other alpha cell genes, but “taking the brakes off” the local signals could lead to alpha to bet...
