HMSA Online Care Instructions for Telemedicine Visits

In response to the current global health crisis COVID-19, here at Honolulu Eye Clinic, we have postponed all annual, routine, and “non-essential” visits and are only available for patient care for “urgent” or “emergent” cases.

If you find yourself in need of urgent eye care, HMSA has made available to all members (HMSA and HMSA-Quest) an option to consult with a doctor via “telemedicine.” We encourage all of our patients to utilize this option first in order to practice safe, social distancing to reduce possible spread of infection.

HMSA telemedicine can be accessed via smartphone, computer, or tablet by downloading the application “HMSA Online Care’

HMSA Online Access via Computer
Iphone HMSA App
Android HMSA App
Once downloaded, register with name, date of birth and HMSA provider ID (starting with the 4th letter).

From there you can search for our doctors. One of our 3 doctors will be available for virtual consults between the hours of 8 am - 4 pm Monday - Friday. Unfortunately, there is no option to search for the clinic, so you will need to search for by individual doctors.

Dr. Jenifer Bossert
Dr. Jeffrey Wong
Dr. Rupa Wong

If the doctor has the green ‘Available Now’ status - you may select provider and request to initiate telemedicine visit. If not, try one of the other doctors in our practice (listed above). All doctors have access to your Honolulu Eye Clinic chart.

You will then be directed to answer questions pertaining to past medical history and current complain. You can even take a photo of area of concern.

After completing all preliminary questions, you will be placed in a ‘virtual waiting room’ until the doctor accepts and begins the encounter. There is a maximum of 10 minutes per encounter, during which you will be able to communicate via video call with your provider.

Our hope is to reduce the strain on our emergency rooms and urgent care clinics as they are inundated with patients. Please utilize this app as much as possible for your eye care. You do not need to be a current patient of Honolulu Eye Clinic to initiate a telemedicine visit with us. So, please feel free to share our information with your friends and family.

NOTICE OF TEMPORARY CLOSURE & TELEMEDICINE

At the Honolulu Eye Clinic, it is truly our privilege to provide eye care for you and your family. Unfortunately this unprecedented global pandemic poses a serious threat. Our top priority is the health and well-being of our patients, families, staff and community, and we are deeply committed to keeping everyone safe. Public health experts agree that we must practice social distancing to limit the spread of this very contagious virus.

On March 17, 2020, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommended that the general public “postpone routine dental and eyecare visits.” On March 18, the AAO (American Academy of Ophthalmology) “strongly recommends that all ophthalmologists provide only urgent or emergent care.” In addition, our surgical centers at Queen's, the Eye Surgery Center of Hawaii, and Kapiolani have stopped all elective surgeries (including cataract and strabismus surgeries).

Thus, we have made the difficult decision to suspend our routine clinical, optical, and surgical services and will only be open for urgent or emergent care. If you have an appointment or surgery scheduled with us, our office will be in touch to help reschedule your appointment.

Should you require emergency eye care, please call our office at 808-526-0030. Our office will have limited day time hours, so please be patient as we all navigate this situation together.

Patients with HMSA and HMSA QUEST may reach our doctors through HMSA’S Online Care. This is a telemedicine application that allows you to see our doctors from the comfort and safety of your home, work, or anywhere you can go online. Get real-time answers to your health questions and concerns – anytime, anywhere. https://hmsa.com/well-being/online-care/
The majority of HMSA plans offer Online Care at no cost to HMSA members.

Patients with UHA, Medicare and HMAA can also schedule telemedicine visits with Drs. Jeff Wong Rupa Wong and Jenifer Bossert. These virtual visits will be billed to your insurance. Unfortunately, at this time, Tricare, HMA and other insurance carriers are not participating with telemedicine.

Should you need to purchase additional contact lenses, we will be extending contact lens prescriptions for three months via our online portal to June 1, 2020. Like most web portals, it does not accept insurance payments. You must have a valid 2019 contact lens prescription from Honolulu Eye Clinic. We appreciate your patience in processing orders since our staffing will need to be severely reduced.

We will continue to evaluate the situation as it evolves and determine when it is appropriate for us to return to our normal practice. Mahalo for your patience, and please stay safe during this challenging time.

Yes, it'll happen to you too. Presbyopia. Needing reading glasses when you're over 40. Everyone thinks it won't affect them. But, whether you're 41, 43 or 48 years old. At some point, it'll hit you. You'll start pulling your reading material further and further away. Your arms just won't be long enough.

This is because the muscle that helps your lens change shape, which allows you to focus, that muscle just doesn't work as well with age. You lose accommodation (ability to focus up close).

Nope, no eye drop to prevent it. No special foods you can eat to make it better. Just reading glasses. Sometimes, a special prescription is necessary. Sometimes, you can get away with over the counter reading glasses you buy at Costco or the drug store.

And, then when you get cataracts in your 60's, there's actually hope! We now have artificial lenses that can make you less glasses dependent for distance and near. Dr. Jeff Wong implants them all with great success.

But, until then...sorry. At least you're joined by Dr. Rupa Wong and Dr. Bossert. We're right there with you.

Yes, you do. Those annoying dilating drops really are necessary to check your eyes.

The drops enlarge the size of your pupil so that we can better visualize the inside structures of your eyes. Think of it like trying to peer through a tiny crack in a window versus opening it up all the way. Dilation allows for better exam of the retina, optic nerve and macula, to assess for conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal tears, and even melanoma. Without them, there's a good chance we could miss a retinal tear in the periphery of your retina.

Yes, the amazing equipment we have to take photographs of the inside of your eye is fantastic. But, there really is no substitute for dilating the eyes. Your eye doctor can just see MORE and tell you if they see signs of diabetes or even high blood pressure.

Dilation does blur your vision up close for 2-4 hours, but typically doesn't affect your distance vision. It will make you light sensitive, but shouldn't affect you driving vision overly much. However, if you're worried about that - bring a friend/relative to drive you. I promise you it's worth being able to tell you that your eyes are healthy.
