June is Fireworks Eye Safety and Cataract Awareness Month

Americans spend hundreds of millions of dollars annually on consumer fireworks, which cause more than 9,000 injuries a year. Remember, fireworks are not toys but incendiary devices that can cause devastating eye injuries.

Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. If not treated, cataracts can lead to blindness. In addition, the longer cataracts are left untreated, the more difficult it can be to successfully remove the cataract and restore vision. Early detection and treatment of cataracts is critical to preserving sight.

If you think you may be developing cataracts, call our office at 808-523-2020 to schedule a consultation today!

May is Health Vision Month

Taking care of your eyes should be just as important as eating healthy and exercising regularly. To keep your eyes healthy, the CDC recommends having a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. When was your last eye exam?

Did you know kids need eye exams too? A child's eyes go through rapid changes, especially in the first six years of life, but fewer than 15% of preschool children receive an eye exam by a professional, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While vision screenings have become ubiquitous in schools across the country, they aren't enough. School vision screenings miss up to 75% of children with vision problems and 61% of the children found to have eye problems through screenings, never visit the doctor or get help.

Our optometrists are specially trained to diagnose and treat many common eye disorders in children, including near sightedness (myopia), far sightedness (hyperopia), and accommodative disorders, strabismus (eye turn), and double vision.

Summer is the perfect time to get an eye exam, and ensure your child is ready for the upcoming school year. Call our office to schedule today!

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, an important time to spread the word about this sight-stealing disease.

Currently, more than 2.7 million people in the United States over age 40 have glaucoma. The National Eye Institute projects this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030, a 58 percent increase. Glaucoma is called "the sneak thief of sight" since there are no symptoms and once vision is lost, it's permanent. As much as 40% of vision can be lost without a person noticing.
