1. March is !

2. Trisomy can mean a few different things. Full trisomy is when there is a full extra chromosome in every cell of a person’s body. Partial trisomy is when there is a part of an extra chromosome in every cell. Mosaic trisomy is when there is an extra chromosome only in some cells of a person’s body.

3. The most common trisomies are Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome), Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome), Trisomy 13 (Patau Syndrome) and Trisomy 9.

4. There are different colored awareness ribbons for Trisomies 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 21, and 22. Other rarer trisomies exist as well. These ribbons were developed by SOFT UK, a support network for families of children with Edward and Patau Syndromes and other trisomies.

Happy Genetic Counselor Awareness Day🧬!

Genetic counselors are integral to our regional genetics network and our mission to expand access to genetics services. They work in clinics, labs, hospitals, and research to help people better understand their health and make informed healthcare decisions. They are shaping the future of personalized medicine and supporting the next generations of previvors.

You can learn more about who genetic counselors are what they do on our website: https://www.westernstatesgenetics.org/genetic_counseling_career_resources/
