After losing a loved one, many people hear the phrase, "It gets better." from a friend who has also lost a loved one at one time or another.
Many condolences are meant to show that they understand, and give hope to those grieving, but sometimes they don't actually help and may even have the opposite effect.
Avoid these condolences:
“It gets better”
“He/she is in a better place”
“I know how you are feeling”
“At least you had a chance to say goodbye”
Try these condolences instead:
“I love you”
“I will miss him/her”
“You are in my thoughts”
“This must be so hard for you”

Those in hospice care can remain in a familiar environment while still feeling safe, comfortable, and maintaining their quality of life with companionship, spiritual counseling, and thoughtful caretaking. These experiences occur more readily if end-of-life preplanning is taken care of, and families are actively involved with deathcare professionals.
