Acupuncture For Cluster Headaches Case Results

A case series published in Neurological Sciences demonstrates that acupuncture is as an effective preventive treatment for cluster headaches (CH), with all four patients in the study experiencing complete cessation of attacks following treatment [1]. This report, while limited in scope, provides important clinical details that can inform best practices for licensed acupuncturists seeking to treat CH with acupuncture.
The outcomes were notably positive. All patients reported complete remission of cluster attacks during and after the treatment period, and no adverse events were recorded. This includes both patients treated solely with acupuncture and those who also continued pharmacologic therapy. Subjective reports indicated improved sleep quality and mood stabilization in some cases, though these secondary outcomes were not the primary focus of the study [1].
In conclusion, this study adds to the small but growing body of literature suggesting acupuncture may be a viable, low-risk option for CH prevention. Given the often intractable and disabling nature of cluster headaches, acupuncture may offer an effective adjunct or alternative for patients with contraindications to standard prophylactic pharmacotherapy.

4 Gates Acupuncture Boosts Brain Connectivity in Alzheimer’s Patients
A study recently published in Frontiers in Neuroscience presents a compelling case for acupuncture as a non-invasive, effective intervention for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). By targeting the Taichong (LV3) and Hegu (LI4) acupuncture points, researchers identified significant changes in functional connectivity within the retrosplenial cortex (RSC), a brain region critical for memory and cognitive integration, offering new hope for combating this devastating neurodegenerative condition.
Findings: Restoring Neural Balance Broader
1. Bidirectional Regulation: acupuncture upregulated and downregulated functional connectivity of the brain, where specifically needed, to restore homeostasis.
2. Improved Cognitive Correlations: acupuncture may activate compensatory neural mechanisms to combat cognitive deficits.
3. Localized and Targeted Impact: regulate energy flow and promote systemic balance.
Implications for Alzheimer’s Treatment Alzheimer’s disease affects over 50 million individuals worldwide and projected to triple by 2050. This study positions acupuncture as an effective modality for inclusion in standard protocols of care.

The role of acupuncture in the treatment of migraine

A German randomized controlled trial (n = 302) showed that acupuncture is more effective than no acupuncture. Another German randomized controlled trial (n = 794) showed that 11 acupuncture treatments given within a six-week period was at least as effective as a β-blocker taken daily over a six-month period. As a consequence of these and 20 other high-quality trials involving 4419 participants, the 2009 Cochrane review by Linde and colleagues found that there is consistent evidence that acupuncture is beneficial in the treatment of acute migraine attacks and that the available studies suggest that acupuncture is at least as effective as prophylactic drug treatment and has fewer adverse effects. Therefore, acupuncture should be considered an option for patients willing to undergo this treatment.
Key points
• A sound body of evidence exists supporting the use of acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis.
• Acupuncture is at least as effective as prophylactic drug therapy for migraine and it is safe, long-lasting and cost-effective.
• Although there seems to be little difference between the two, Chinese acupuncture points might be marginally more effective than non-Chinese points.
