Sciatica is characterized by pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that can run from the low back and down the leg. It is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve. Common areas of compression include the lumbar spine, from disc or bony changes, and in the hip from a tight piriformis muscle. Repeated movements, lifting, bending, twisting, and prolonged poor posture can be a few of the causes of sciatica. A thorough evaluation performed by a physical therapist can help to identify the possible causes of the symptoms. From this evaluation, an individualized treatment plan will be developed that may include range of motion exercises, stretching, strengthening, manual treatments and pain relieving modalities. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, our Baptist Health Therapy Centers are here to help!

Vertigo is a sudden spinning sensation that can disorient the affected individual. The most common cause of vertigo is benign paroxysmal position vertigo (BPPV), an inner ear disorder. With this type of vertigo, dizziness is triggered by changes in head position such as rolling over in bed, sitting up in bed, or standing up from a chair. BPPV can be caused by falls, head trauma, ear infections, and new medications; most of the time, though, it is idiopathic, or without a known cause. Physical therapists are skilled at detecting and treating BPPV. If you think you are currently experiencing a bout of vertigo, contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center for help today.

24/06/2025

An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments supporting an ankle stretch beyond their limits. Ankle sprains are typically graded on three classifications based on the severity of the injury. For example, a Grade 1 sprain involves light ligament tearing and swelling, whereas a Grade 2 or Grade 3 sprain will involve increasing amounts of ligament damage, tenderness, and difficulty with weight bearing. An ankle sprain is a common injury for individuals of all ages; it may be involved with sports, falls, or walking on uneven surfaces. Initial injury management includes ice, elevation, and compression as needed for swelling. As movement tolerance improves, physical therapy is a beneficial next step in the rehabilitation process. Physical therapy treatment will include range of motion, strength training, and balance training. As you progress, gradual transition into endurance exercises like jogging and agility drills may be initiated as appropriate. A large majority of ankle sprains do not require surgery; however, surgery for chronic spains or sprains that fail to heal with conservative treatment may be warranted. In this case, physical therapy will still play a critical role in return to function. Contact your local Baptist Therapy center today for information on ankle sprain rehabilitation!

The sacroilliac joint, or SI joint, is the joint that is formed between the sacrum and the ilium of the hip and is located on both the left and right sides. SI joint dysfunction can be caused by stiffness on one side of the joint, muscle imbalances, hypermobility of the joint, a fall or injury, and overuse from repetitive activities. SI joint dysfunction symptoms may include:

Sharp, stabbing, or dull pain on one side of your pelvis/low back, groin, or tailbone and pain that may radiate down to the knee

Pain with sit to stand position change, turning over in bed, bending, or twisting.

Tightness and tenderness in the hip/buttock region.

Pain that is worse with walking, standing, and prolonged sitting that is eased by a change of position

Physical therapy can play an important role in helping you achieve pain relief, improve functional ability, and restore any losses in strength and range of motion that you may be experiencing due to SI joint dysfunction. A PT will perform an evaluation and then develop an individualized plan that may include stretching, strengthening, manual treatments, and pain reducing modalities to get you back to your activities. If you are experiencing SI joint dysfunction symptoms, contact your local Baptist Therapy center to see how we can help!

Whiplash is an injury that occurs due to a sudden and forceful movement of the neck. The most common mechanism for whiplash happens during a car accident, but can also take place with sports injuries or during a fall. Prevention for whiplash includes vehicle seat adjustments and proper seat belt usage, as well avoiding dangerous movements when possible with contact sports. A whiplash injury will strain neck muscles and can potentially damage bone, ligament, and nerves. Once serious injury has been ruled out with imaging, a physician may recommend physical therapy for treatment. Physical therapy treatment may include strengthening and mobilization of the injured muscles, as well as modalities like ice and heat for pain management. If you are suffering from a recent whiplash injury, or are still dealing with pain from an injury in the past, feel free to contact your local Baptist Therapy Center to see how we can help you!

04/05/2025

Total shoulder replacement, also referred to as shoulder arthroplasty, is when a surgeon removes the ends of the two bones that make up the shoulder joint and replaces them with artificial parts. Total shoulder replacement is typically performed when a patient has not responded well to more conservative treatments The two common types of total shoulder replacements are a total shoulder and reverse total shoulder replacement. With a traditional total shoulder replacement the ball and socket remain in their original position. With a reverse total shoulder replacement, the ball and socket portions of the shoulder are reversed. Physical therapists play a key role both before and after surgery. Prior to surgery, physical therapy can help patients improve range of motion, strength, and flexibility to promote a better outcome following surgery. After surgery, physical therapists will work to restore range of motion, manage pain, improve strength, and increase functional ability. Contact your local Baptist Therapy Center to see how we can help you!

22/04/2025

A total hip replacement, also known as a total hip arthroplasty (THA), is a surgical procedure in which damaged bone and cartilage is removed from the hip and replaced with prosthetic components. A patient most often undergoes a THA due to severe and progressive osteoarthritis, although trauma and avascular necrosis are common reasons as well. Once the replacement has been decided on and completed, the orthopedic surgeon will likely request for physical therapy to begin soon after. Immediately following surgery, physical therapy emphasis will include decreasing swelling, safe transfers and ambulation, and adherence to post-surgical precautions. As healing progresses, more advanced mobility and strengthening can take place. The THA can be a highly successful surgery, and patients who undergo the surgery can expect a safe return to walking, biking, and other low impact activities. If you have had a total hip replacement, or have plans to have one done soon, consider Baptist Health for your outpatient physical therapy services!
