For the Conclusion of the 2024 Black Maternal Health Week, here is a bit about BMMA in their own words:

“The Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Inc. (BMMA) is a national network of Black women-led organizations and multi-disciplinary professionals who work to ensure that all Black Mamas have the rights, respect, and resources
to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy. BMMA honors the work and historical contributions of Black women’s leadership within their communities, and values the need to amplify this work on a national scale.
For this reason, BMMA does not have chapters. The alliance is composed of existing organizations and individuals whose work is deeply rooted in reproductive justice, birth justice, and human rights frameworks.

Thank you for joining us in observing the 7th annual Black Maternal Health Week 2024 ( ). Founded by BMMA, Black Maternal Health Week is a week of awareness, activism, and community-building aimed at
amplifying the voices of Black Mamas, bringing visibility to Black-led maternal health initiatives, and centering the values and traditions of the
reproductive and birth justice movements.”

"Our Bodies STILL Belong to Us: Reproductive Justice NOW!"
Widespread restrictions on abortion care access coupled with rising cases of
criminalization due to pregnancy loss continue to widen the gaps of adverse maternal and birth outcomes among states in the U.S. Many of these states have the worst maternal and child health outcomes with the least supportive social welfare and family support programs, particularly for Black women and birthing people. The time is NOW to demand comprehensive insurance for maternal, sexual, and reproductive health; improve access to care; guide healthcare entities on equitable, quality care; and fund research prioritizing ALL Black women, Black Mamas and Black Birthing People, as fully described in BMMA's comprehensive Policy Agenda https://blackmamasmatter.org/policy-agenda/

Did you know the whole concept of ‘hind milk’ and ‘foremilk’ imbalance is largely misunderstood? 🧐 Many think they’re two distinct types of milk, but in reality, the change from ‘foremilk’ (the milk at the beginning of a feed) to ‘hind milk’ (milk with more fat content later in the feed) is super gradual. There’s no specific point where one turns into the other.

Both types of milk are incredibly important. 🌟 Whether it’s milk rich in carbohydrates and proteins or milk higher in fat but lower in carbs, each has its unique benefits. For moms with a typical full milk supply who don’t produce significantly more than baby needs, worrying about this balance isn’t necessary.

However, if you have a large oversupply, your baby might experience symptoms of lactose overload like explosive or frequent stools, gas, tummy ache and frequent spitting up. In such cases, chatting with a Lactation Consultant is key. They can provide strategies to manage these symptoms effectively. 🙌

In the first 2-3 months, it’s crucial to ALWAYS offer both breasts to your baby during each feeding! They might not always want the second breast, but limiting access due to the myth of ‘getting to the fatty milk’ isn’t helpful. Similarly, if your baby isn’t gaining enough weight, restricting access to the second breast isn’t advisable. This is a common misconception and can be counterproductive.

For babies needing more, switch nursing can be a game-changer. It involves frequently switching breasts during a feed, ensuring your baby gets multiple let-downs. This not only helps with their intake but can reduce frustration too.

Remember, every drop of milk you produce is precious and beneficial for your baby. Let’s embrace this natural variation and support each other through this journey! 💕

As we get ready to celebrate the New Year, let's dive into some intriguing scientific facts and statistics about childbirth during this festive season in the USA and Europe.
New Year’s Baby Boom? Contrary to popular belief, there's no significant spike in births on January 1st. In fact, studies show that the rate of deliveries tends to be lower on New Year's Day compared to the average day.
Scheduled Deliveries: In the USA, the trend of scheduled C-sections and induced labor decreases over the holiday period, including New Year's Eve and Day. Hospitals often see a dip in these procedures as people prefer not to schedule them during holidays.
European Trends: Similar to the USA, European countries like the UK and France also experience a slight decrease in birth rates during the New Year period. The festive season generally sees a lower rate of childbirth, partly due to the scheduling preferences of expectant parents and medical professionals.
Birthday Rarity: Being born on New Year’s Day is quite rare! This makes New Year’s babies unique, often getting a bit of local fame as the first baby of the year in newspapers and news reports.
Post-Holiday Surge: Interestingly, there tends to be a slight increase in births in the weeks following the holidays, which could correlate with the timing of conception during holiday celebrations.
As we ring in the New Year, it's fascinating to see how the joy of childbirth intertwines with cultural, medical, and social practices during the holiday season.

The Holiday season is here and in full swing! We know how important it is for parents to maintain their milk supply while enjoying the festivities. 🎄🤱 Here are some tips to protect your milk supply during the holidays:⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

1️⃣ Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep yourself hydrated and support milk production.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

2️⃣ Stick to your feeding routine: Maintain a consistent feeding schedule to ensure regular stimulation and milk production.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

3️⃣ Find a quiet space: Seek a peaceful spot to feed, away from the holiday hustle and bustle, to minimize distractions and promote relaxation.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

4️⃣ Plan for breaks: Take breaks during gatherings to feed or express milk. This will help prevent engorgement and maintain milk supply.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

5️⃣ Eat nourishing foods: Enjoy a balanced diet including foods rich in lactation-supporting nutrients, such as leafy greens, whole grains, and protein-rich sources.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Remember, taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your little one. Wishing you a joyful and stress-free holiday season with abundant milk supply! 🎁🥛💕 . (cute client baby photo shared with permission and for attention, because she’s the cutest gingerbread cookie ever!)

Tummy time is super important for your baby’s development. Here are a few tips and tricks that can make tummy time a little more fun for the littles.

💗Contrast cards to help lift their heads and keep them engaged

💚Mirrors can go a long way with your little- they love to see their reflections

💗A toy that will keep them interested- musical toy, rattle, lovey

❔A question we get frequently- when do I need to start tummy time? You can begin tummy time right away. Laying on your stomach and lifting their heads, baby wearing, and floor time starting at 2 weeks, all counts as tummy time.

❔Another question, how long should my baby do tummy time?

⏰Ideal daily timeframes by age:
Newborn- a few minutes, a couple times per day
1-2 months- 15-30 minutes throughout the day (not in one sitting)
3 months- 30-60 minutes throughout the day
4 months+ 60-90 minutes throughout the day
