Parkinson disease is caused by the loss of the cells in the brain that produce dopamine. This decrease in dopamine can impair control of body movement, decision making and mood. Some of the most common physical impairments associated with Parkinson are tremors, increased muscle and joint stiffness, and slowed movements. These impairments can lead to changes in ability to walk and balance issues. At Baptist Health Therapy Centers, a therapist will perform an individualized evaluation to determine the limitations that need to be addressed and develop a specific treatment plan that may include stretching, strengthening, and balance activities to improve overall function.

Spinal stenosis takes place when the space surrounding your spinal cord becomes too narrow, specifically in the neck or lower back. Spinal stenosis often develops slowly and can cause radiating symptoms down the arms or legs. Common symptoms include pain, numbness, and weakness. With low back stenosis you may experience weakness and cramping in the legs, difficulty with prolonged standing or walking, and decreased pain with sitting and leaning forward. Neck stenosis presents slightly differently, with numbness and tingling through the arms, as well as difficulty with hand tasks. Treatment for spinal stenosis largely depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms. While surgery may be necessary for more severe cases, conservative care including physical therapy is typically a warranted first step. Physical therapy will generally involve exercises including core strengthening and flexibility training. Your physical therapist will work to develop an individualized plan of care that addresses not only strength deficits, but return to functional activities as well. If you need help managing spinal stenosis symptoms, please contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center today!

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is a result of inflammation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of connective tissue that connects your heel to the ball of your foot. Symptoms of plantar fasciitis may include pain on the bottom of your heel and a feeling of tightness and/or tenderness along your arch. Symptoms are typically worse first thing in the morning, with long periods of standing, after running and jumping activities, and climbing stairs. Physical therapists can use their examination and treatment skills to develop a program to include, but not limited to, stretches, strengthening, gait and balance straining, and footwear education. If you are experiencing foot pain that is limiting your ability to perform daily activities, contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center and see how we can help!

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your body and connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. Achilles tendon ruptures are most commonly caused by forceful motions such as running and jumping. In some cases, the rupture or tear will require a surgical repair. Following surgery, recovery is typically done in phases with physical therapy playing an integral role in the recovery process. This will include activities to restore range of motion, increase strength, balance activities, restoring normal gait and return to sport activities. Contact your local Baptist Therapy Center today to see how our teams can help you in your recovery process!

Peripheral neuropathy takes place when damage is sustained to nerves in the hands and feet. Symptoms may consist of numbness and tingling in the affected limb, weakness, sensitivity to touch, and balance issues. The most common causes of neuropathy include diabetes, traumatic injuries, and infections; it is also possible to sustain neuropathy following certain medication use, such chemotherapy. Whether or not neuropathy is reversible is largely dependent on the root cause. Regardless of cause, physical therapy serves as an effective treatment option for managing neuropathy symptoms and improving quality of life. Focus on treatment might include flexibility training, aerobic conditioning, or balance training. If you are experiencing neuropathy currently, or are struggling with associated weakness and balance, contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center for help today!

Vertigo is a sudden spinning sensation that can disorient the affected individual. The most common cause of vertigo is benign paroxysmal position vertigo (BPPV), an inner ear disorder. With this type of vertigo, dizziness is triggered by changes in head position such as rolling over in bed, sitting up in bed, or standing up from a chair. BPPV can be caused by falls, head trauma, ear infections, and new medications; most of the time, though, it is idiopathic, or without a known cause. Physical therapists are skilled at detecting and treating BPPV. If you think you are currently experiencing a bout of vertigo, contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center for help today.

06/17/2025

An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments supporting an ankle stretch beyond their limits. Ankle sprains are typically graded on three classifications based on the severity of the injury. For example, a Grade 1 sprain involves light ligament tearing and swelling, whereas a Grade 2 or Grade 3 sprain will involve increasing amounts of ligament damage, tenderness, and difficulty with weight bearing. An ankle sprain is a common injury for individuals of all ages; it may be involved with sports, falls, or walking on uneven surfaces. Initial injury management includes ice, elevation, and compression as needed for swelling. As movement tolerance improves, physical therapy is a beneficial next step in the rehabilitation process. Physical therapy treatment will include range of motion, strength training, and balance training. As you progress, gradual transition into endurance exercises like jogging and agility drills may be initiated as appropriate. A large majority of ankle sprains do not require surgery; however, surgery for chronic spains or sprains that fail to heal with conservative treatment may be warranted. In this case, physical therapy will still play a critical role in return to function. Contact your local Baptist Therapy center today for information on ankle sprain rehabilitation!

Whiplash is an injury that occurs due to a sudden and forceful movement of the neck. The most common mechanism for whiplash happens during a car accident, but can also take place with sports injuries or during a fall. Prevention for whiplash includes vehicle seat adjustments and proper seat belt usage, as well avoiding dangerous movements when possible with contact sports. A whiplash injury will strain neck muscles and can potentially damage bone, ligament, and nerves. Once serious injury has been ruled out with imaging, a physician may recommend physical therapy for treatment. Physical therapy treatment may include strengthening and mobilization of the injured muscles, as well as modalities like ice and heat for pain management. If you are suffering from a recent whiplash injury, or are still dealing with pain from an injury in the past, feel free to contact your local Baptist Therapy Center to see how we can help you!
