AR WIC Breastfeeding

AR WIC Breastfeeding The WIC program is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.

Breastfeeding is the beginning of healthy eating, growth, and development for babies. The frequent close contact from breastfeeding helps to build a loving relationship that enhances a child’s development. Breastfeeding also provides healthy eating through a nurturing environment that plays a significant role in optimizing health and preventing chronic disease. The WIC program is dedicated to promoting and supporting breastfeeding for all mothers and their babies as a part of improving the overall health of Arkansas communities. This is done through the creation of positive environments for families, competency training for health professionals, and access to relevant evidence based resources for local communities.

During the holidays, good-intentioned family members may want to share bites with your baby, because they feel baby is missing out on the special meal. How do you know if your baby is ready for foods? 6 months, when most babies can sit without support, is a great time to start introducing foods to baby. Giving foods before 6 months is more likely to result in an unhappy tummy or even choking/aspiration. It's also encouraged to introduce foods one at a time to watch for food allergies, but often holiday foods contain multiple ingredients. What can you do to include your younger baby? Give them a sipper cup of breastmilk or formula and a safe spoon to play with. For your older baby, bites of plain sweet potato is a yummy option 😋 Ask your WIC office for an "Infant Feeding Guide" for more information, or go to this link to find the English and Spanish guideshttps://healthy.arkansas.gov/wp-content/uploads/Infant_Feeding_Guide_English.pdf

What are the benefits of tummy time?

Supervised tummy time is important because it helps to:

➡️Strengthen baby’s neck, shoulder, and arm muscles so the baby can start to sit up, crawl, and eventually walk on their own
➡️Improve baby’s ability to move and control their muscles to complete various actions (sometimes called “motor skills”)
➡️Prevent flat spots on the back of baby’s head

Whether you are traveling or hosting out-of-town guests, make sure to prioritize safe infant sleep. Call ahead to make sure there is a portable crib, bassinette, or play yard that meets the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) available where you will be staying. If not, bring your own. Do not use sitting devices, such as car seats and strollers, or carrying devices, such as carriers and slings, for baby’s regular sleep area.

Reminder: Even while away from home, babies should still have their own sleep space.

While on the go, remember to:

➡️Give baby breaks from their car seat every few hours.

➡️Avoid letting baby sit slumped over, such as with the chin on the chest, because sitting in that position could block their airway and breathing.

➡️If baby falls asleep in a car seat, move them to a firm, flat, and level sleep space as soon as possible once you are out of the vehicle.

We were just staking about this last week on mom to mom live 😍🍎🥦 How are your kiddos involved in food prep at your house?

Get kids involved in meal preparation! 🥦🍅 Let them pick out fruits and veggies at the grocery store or farmers market, and then have them help wash, peel, and chop them for meals.

When kids are involved in food preparation, it can encourage them to try new foods and learn where our foods come from 👩‍🌾 And with WIC, you can get fresh, canned, or frozen fruits and veggies to accommodate your families specific needs and preferences! 🙌

Not enrolled in WIC yet? Learn more about the benefits and get started today: https://signupwic.com/about

_____

Winter is just around the corner! Remember to keep baby warm, but not too warm. Baby can get overheated if they are wearing too many layers of clothes and bedding (sometimes called overbundling) based on the room temperature. Overheating increases babies’ risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Avoid overheating while still keeping baby cozy during chilly months by:

➡️Dressing baby in clothes suitable for the temperature of the room

➡️Using a wearable blanket or an extra layer of clothes to keep baby warm without adding items to the sleep area

➡️Making sure baby’s head and face stay uncovered during sleep

➡️Removing baby's hat when indoors

➡️Watching for signs that baby is too hot, such as sweating, flushed or red skin, or their chest feeling hot to the touch
