Dry needling uses a very thin, solid needle inserted into trigger points in a general location.
1. Neuromuscular Reset
-When the needle stimulates a trigger point, it can cause a “local twitch response” — a quick contraction and relaxation of the muscle.
-This helps reset the nervous system’s control of that muscle, reducing tension and restoring normal function.
2. Improved Blood Flow & Healing
-Tight or knotted muscles often restrict circulation.
-Needling causes a micro-injury that increases blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients to the area, kickstarting the body’s natural healing response.
3. Pain Modulation
-Dry needling activates pain inhibitory pathways in the brain and spinal cord.
-This reduces the sensitivity of overactive nerves and decreases pain perception.
4. Release of Biochemical Mediators
-Studies show that dry needling decreases substances linked to pain and inflammation (like substance P and CGRP).
-It also stimulates endorphin release (your body’s natural painkillers.)
5. Restoring Movement Patterns
-By calming hyperactive trigger points, muscles can move freely again.
-This improves range of motion and helps re-establish healthy movement patterns.
