The evaluation is critical …….

In schools and private practices across the country, families of struggling students are told, “Get an evaluation,” as if simply identifying a diagnosis is the solution. But what happens when the evaluation is conducted by the wrong person, someone who either lacks deep expertise in language dev...

Found this professional development opportunity this weekend and wanted to share with local SLP's! I know it is short notice but so worth your time if you treat in the private clinic setting and want to teach students with DLD and a wide variety of other DX to read and write!

I must give a shout out for The DuBard Association Method...... it is the method that so many languaged delayed, apraxic, hearing impaired, children with CP and Down's Syndrome have learned how to read and write/text using DuBard! When we started ACCESS in 1994, it was mostly because of finding the DuBard Association Method, it was the method we used from the 3 year old classroom and up.

If you don't get into this training, try to ASAP, you will never regret investing in this method or yourself! The more you know, the better you can do!

Students with DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) require an explicit, incremental, systematic way to learn how to decode/read, encode/spell, and write. Many times the pace is slower but research has validated that they can learn and be expected to make progress.

Below you see Montessori’s cursive alphabet, and The DuBard Association’s vocabulary cards. This youngster had been in Take Flight for a couple of years with little to no progress then BOOM …. he’s moving forward with good steady progress. Take Flight is wonderful, BUT not for everyone (one size does not fit all)!

This precious one’s dad told me today “he asked me to read to him this past weekend for the first time in his life!”

As summer approaches, many families begin to wind down from the academic year, looking forward to a break from routines, early mornings, and school responsibilities. While rest and unstructured time are important for children, pausing language and literacy therapy over the summer can have serious co...

For example, there are computer programs geared toward children who are learning to read and write. Since the exercises that they propose are to be done on computer, the stu...
