This is one of my favorite rides through the Ken Caryl Valley and into Deer Creek Canyon. I’m riding with less tension in my shoulders and neck thanks to my understanding of the pilates principles and how I can stabilize my shoulder girdle. Hips Hip Hips…Again!

Last week I spoke of my obsession with hips that move well. Having balance between strength and flexibility at the hip joint creates efficient movement. I posted an article about the importance of using the hips during the golf swing.

While hiking last weekend,I rediscovered the importance of good hip mechanics in order to save my knees (one of which has had 2 surgeries). Here’s the tip: When taking a step, focus on the backside of your leg (vs the front of the hip and knee).Visualize a string that attaches the back of your heel to the the top of your thigh and when stepping engage that “back line of your leg.” Using the hamstrings and hip extensor muscles will help to alleviate knee pain.

I’m pictured here at Chicago Lakes in the Mt Evans wilderness area….a hard hike, but oh so worth it!! I took my hiking poles, but saved my knees by moving mindfully!

It’s All About your Hips!

Being a person that likes to analyze movement, I have found myself recently obsessed with hips! The hip joint is the ball and socket joint connecting the upper leg bone to the pelvis. Stability and powerful musculature at this joint are essential for standing, walking and a variety of sports. In addition, good range of motion at the hip joint is critical so as to not affect nearby structures like the low back and knee.

Because Pilates works towards creating symmetry between strength and flexibility of our hips, a person who practices pilates regularly will move more efficiently and completely at this joint.
