Did you know that about 1.1 million people in the United States are living with Parkinson's disease (PD)? 🌷

🧠 This progressive brain disorder is perhaps most well known for causing tremors, but other symptoms include loss of vocal volume, sleep disruptions, stiffness, and balance issues, among others.

Thankfully, there are ways to improve Parkinson's symptoms! 😀 Our therapy team offers rehabilitation services to help improve mobility, range of motion, function, and speech for those living with PD. Call us to see how we can support you or your loved one.

⭐ Therapy Success Story ⭐

Bill has enjoyed living the idyllic Florida lifestyle for the past twelve years. At 86 years old, Bill spent his days fishing with friends on the Indian River Lagoon, attending weekly yoga lessons, and driving his 1997 Ford F-150 around town. The proud father of 1 son and grandfather to 3 grandchildren, Bill was the epitome of good health. In his own words: "I never touched salt, I never touched sugar, and I exercised every day."

During the week of Christmas 2025, Bill's world turned upside down. He began experiencing headaches and slurred speech. After going to the ER, testing revealed that Bill had suffered a stroke. Thanks in part to his active lifestyle, Bill was able to maintain most of his physical abilities. However, the stroke significantly effected both his speech and swallowing abilities.

After 3 weeks in the hospital, Bill was transferred to Life Care Center of Melbourne in January 2026. He immediately began physical, occupational, and speech therapies to address the issues caused by his stroke. He quickly became a fixture of the facility, walking the halls and greeting staff and residents alike. His positive attitude and strong work ethic were apparent to all who met him.

Despite his physical recovery, Bill was still unable to swallow. Working with Mike Matthews, his Speech-Language Pathologist, he completed a program to improve his swallowing function.

"I was scared that I would never be able to eat again," remembered Bill. After four weeks of intensive swallowing therapy, Bill returned to the hospital to complete a swallow study. Through an X-ray, the clinician was able to see that Bill's pharyngeal swallow function had markedly improved. Bill was able to return to eating on his own, and soon after transitioned back to a regular diet.

Reflecting on his progress, Bill said, "I couldn't swallow anything when I got here, but Mike worked with me. He was a good therapist to me. Now I can eat again. I went out with my son when he visited, and I ordered spareribs. I didn't even have to think twice about it."

Now, 3 months after his stroke, Bill is going home! He looks forward to visiting with his friends and resuming his life. "He has come so far and l am so proud of him," said Mike. "He earned everything that he accomplished through hard work and determination."

"Everyone here was good to me," said Bill. "I am so thankful for Mike. He is an excellent therapist and a good friend." Bill, thank you for trusting Life Care Center of Melbourne with your rehab journey. We're so proud of you and enjoyed having you here! ❤️

🐣 The courtyard filled with laughter as children raced around searching for colorful eggs tucked into every corner. 🩷

🐰 Right in the middle of it all was the Easter Bunny, clapping, waving, and cheering them on like the world’s biggest fan. Residents watched with bright smiles, some calling out “You missed one!” or pointing to hidden spots. A few kids even stopped to show off their baskets, proud of every egg they found. 😊 For a little while, it wasn’t just an egg hunt — it was a day full of shared joy, where giggles and smiles belonged to everyone.

🐰 Two bunnies came hopping in together last week sharing treats, joy, laughs and high-fives. 😆

They clapped along to music, did a few silly dances, and made their way around the facility sharing treats, laughs and high-fives, the residents and staff couldn’t stop smiling. 🐇 Thank you, bunnies, for making our Easter memorable! 🐣

What does Occupational Therapy look like❓

It looks like someone practicing how to button a shirt again. 👔 Rebuilding the strength and dexterity to hold a coffee cup. ☕ Rehearsing the motions to prepare a simple meal and learning to use a reacher to safely pick things up without bending 🫳.

During Occupational Therapy Month, we’re celebrating the amazing therapists who help our rehab patients rebuild confidence, independence, and the skills that make daily life meaningful. 🫶

Thank you to our incredible OTs for the difference you make every day. 💙

☘️ The dining room was filled with laughter as residents and their families gathered to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day here at Life Care Center of Melbourne! 💚 In the corner stood a cheerful blow-up leprechaun — Seamus O’Flaherty — watching over the celebration with his permanent grin. Staff joined in the fun, snapping photos with Seamus, our "Irish bloke," 🇮🇪 passing around goodies, and making sure everyone felt included. For a little while, the room felt less like a dining hall and more like a family home — warm, lively, and full of simple joy. 🌈✨
