The algorithms are pointing us all to focus on what’s wrong with us. Thankfully, our faith offers a beautiful counter message that is worth embracing especially in our parenting.
In this podcast, I was able to share some practical tips parents can do in order to reorient our family focus to what is right about us.

Maria Morera Johnson and co-host Kristina Talbot discuss the importance of focusing on what is right with our kids.

It’s one thing to love the work you do, but even better to love who you do the work with. This past weekend got a special visit all the way from Nebraska when Dr. Bonnie Lovett, LMHC came to town. She may have brought the cold with her but we took time to practice what we preach by taking walks, working out, eating good food and spending time catching up as well as planning for the future. To say it was a blessing is an understatement. Truly, the Lord knew what He was doing when our paths crossed on my first gig out of grad school. She continues to be such a supportive force in my life and all whom she serves.

These past few weeks have held an extra weight to them. In my work, it remains a sacred privilege to accompany individuals through their struggles. I had to take some time to regroup in order to continue. Here is a link to my reflection on how the words of Pope Leo XVI helped me to reset. https://kristinatalbot.substack.com/p/recovering-hope

When I started my business a few years ago I dreamed of working in a manner that fit with my family. This summer, I opted to scale back my time in the office in order to spend more time with them.
It wasn’t perfect.
I didn’t get everything done.
But it helped me see that part of the beauty of this work is that I get to learn and grow along with those whom I serve.
The principle of self-compassion remains fundamental to what I teach in my practice. This summer, I worked on engaging that skill within my own life as I was reminded that we can’t always do it all, but we can order our priorities.
I’m so happy to be back to work with regular office hours and I’m so thankful for the gift of being my own boss to allow for time well spent.

It’s funny how we can put restrictions on ourselves that keep us from things we need. I have skipped countless short beach walks because I was already in my “work clothes”.

Today, I opted to over ride that “rule” and soak up the sun for a few moments before starting the day. Perhaps, there is a little pause you can insert into your work day that may help…a short walk at lunch even without the “right” shoes, a brief stop at a park before or after work could also be in order.

We are able to set so many things up the way we prefer, but sometimes, over riding our “preferences” opens us up to opportunities we talked ourselves out of.

What can you “over ride” this week to give yourself a moment?

Can you think of a time you took a risk?

The picture on your left, is me terrified to walk into a room full of strangers in mid- September. I literally sat in my car for 5-10 minutes working to convince myself that I belonged in a room filled with community leaders dealing with a strong case of imposter syndrome.

Fast forward to the picture on your right. That’s me sitting in the car today with a heart full of gratitude, wrapping up session 8 with that same group of people who are no longer strangers but friends.

Last summer I took a risk and applied to become a member of the c/o 2025 which will go down as the best class ever. Through the course of eight sessions, I was exposed to different facets of our community I didn’t even know existed and I had the opportunity to get to know dynamic individuals whose added value to our community is immeasurable.

To share space with the beauty, greatness, and brilliance found in this group of professionals has truly been life changing. Not only am I no longer terrified to enter the room with them, I am now concluding this chapter with collective marching orders to make this time together mean something that goes beyond the walls of the rooms in which we have gathered. So thus, we are no longer waiting on the world to change, we get to be the change with this new perspective we have been given.
