Wade’s Wisdom: Understanding Hammertoe

From Dr. Allison Wade, Foot & Ankle Orthopedic Surgeon

What the is a hammertoe? It’s a common foot condition where one of your smaller toes bends or curls downward instead of pointing forward. It can happen due to an imbalance in the muscles or tendons that normally keep the toe straight.

Signs & Symptoms:
-A toe that bends downward in the middle joint
-Pain or irritation when wearing shoes
-Corns or calluses on the top of the affected toe from rubbing against your shoe

How Dr. Wade Can Help:
We start with conservative treatments like padding, orthotics, and footwear changes. If needed, we can discuss surgical options to straighten the toe.

Bottom line: If a hammertoe is causing you discomfort, we’re here to help you find relief.

Wade's Wisdom: What the Heck Is PRP?

From Dr. Allison Wade, Foot & Ankle Orthopedic Surgeon

We get this question a lot! PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma, and it’s a natural way to boost healing.

How does it work?
We draw a small sample of your blood, spin it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and then inject that platelet-rich plasma right where you need it. Platelets are like your body's own little healing helpers!

What can PRP treat?
-Plantar fasciitis
-Tendon injuries (like Achilles tendonitis)
-Mild arthritis and more!

Why choose PRP?
It’s a minimally invasive, natural option that can help speed up your recovery and reduce pain.

Bottom line: If you're curious about PRP, we’re here to answer your questions and see if it’s right for you!

Wade’s Wisdom: What You Need to Know About Stress Fractures

From Dr. Allison Wade, Foot & Ankle Orthopedic Surgeon

Feeling a nagging pain in your foot that just won’t go away? It might be a stress fracture.

What is a Stress Fracture?
-A stress fracture is a small crack in a bone, often caused by repetitive force or overuse. It’s common in athletes or anyone who suddenly increases activity like walking or running.

Signs & Symptoms:
-Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest
-Swelling on the top of the foot or ankle
-Tenderness to touch at a specific spot

How Dr. Wade Can Help:
We’ll start with a clinical evaluation and imaging to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment usually involves rest, protective footwear, and sometimes a walking boot. The good news? Most stress fractures heal well with conservative care.

Bottom line: Don’t ignore foot pain that sticks around—let’s get you on the path to healing.

It can affect your feet too.

Types of Foot Arthritis:
-Osteoarthritis: Wear-and-tear arthritis that can develop over time, especially in the big toe joint.
-Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune condition that can cause joint inflammation and deformities in the feet.
-Post-Traumatic Arthritis: Develops after an injury to the foot or ankle, like a fracture.

Common Signs & Symptoms:
-Joint pain and stiffness in the foot or ankle
-Swelling or tenderness in the affected area
-Difficulty walking or moving the foot

How Dr. Wade Can Help:
We focus on non-surgical treatments first—like custom orthotics, physical therapy, and injections (cortisone or Platelet Rich Plasma) to reduce inflammation. Surgery is considered if conservative methods don’t bring relief.

Ever feel like there’s a pebble stuck in your shoe, but there’s nothing there? You might have Morton’s neuroma.

What is Morton’s neuroma?

-Numbness or tingling in your toes
-Feeling like there’s something inside the ball of your foot when you walk

How Dr. Wade Can Help:

Wade’s Wisdom: What the Heck is a Bunion?

From Dr. Allison Wade, Foot & Ankle Orthopedic Surgeon

Ever wonder what the a bunion really is?
A bunion isn’t just a bump — it’s a change in your foot’s anatomy:
-The big toe joint shifts out of place
-The bone angles inward
-Over time, the joint sticks out, creating that painful bump on the side of your foot

Signs & Symptoms:
Pain at the base of the big toe
Redness, swelling, or soreness around the bump
Trouble finding comfortable shoes
Toes crowding or overlapping

What to Do About It:
šŸ‘Ÿ Wear supportive shoes with a wide toe box
- Try bunion sleeves or pads for comfort
šŸ’‰ Injections may help reduce inflammation
-And in some cases, surgery is the best option to realign the joint

Dr. Wade’s tip:
ā€œNot every bunion needs surgery — but if your bunion pain is interfering with daily life, it’s time to be evaluated.ā€

Wade’s Wisdom: Could It Be an Achilles Tear?

An Achilles tendon rupture is one of the most common sports-related injuries we see — especially in tennis and pickleball players. Knowing the signs can make all the difference in recovery.

āš ļø Common Signs & Symptoms:
Sudden ā€œpopā€ in the back of the ankle
Feeling like you were kicked from behind (when no one was there)
Sharp pain and swelling in the calf or ankle
Trouble pointing your toes or standing on tiptoes
Weakness or difficulty walking

🩺 What to Do Immediately:
Stop activity right away
Don’t try to ā€œwalk it offā€
Ice + elevate to reduce swelling
Seek urgent evaluation — untreated ruptures often require surgery

Dr. Wade’s tip:

ā€œIf you can’t rise up on your tiptoes after the injury, get checked right away. Early diagnosis = better treatment and faster recovery.ā€
