Make it a routine to check medication supply both in the pharmacy and in the weekly pill organizer. Running low can lead to missed doses, health setbacks, or last-minute stress. Set a recurring reminder to refill prescriptions a few days early—especially for time-sensitive medications. Staying ahead ensures consistent care and peace of mind for both you and your loved one.

A quick peek into a loved one’s refrigerator can reveal more than expired milk—it may signal deeper concerns. Spoiled food, empty shelves, or duplicate items can point to memory issues, physical challenges with shopping or cooking, or even financial strain. If you notice these signs, it’s time to step in. Support can include meal delivery services, grocery assistance, or working with a care manager to ensure safe, consistent, and nutritious meals. It’s not just about what’s in the fridge—it’s about their overall well-being.

In a medical situation, quick access to accurate information is essential. Keeping both digital and hard copy versions of key documents—like medication lists, advance directives, and emergency contacts—ensures you’re ready no matter the setting. A digital file allows you to quickly email or fax to hospitals or providers, while a hard copy binder is easy to grab and bring with you. Redundancy isn’t over-preparing—it’s smart planning that can save time, reduce errors, and improve care.

If a loved one has experienced a fall—even a minor one—it’s important not to dismiss it. Falls can signal declining strength, balance, or mobility, and often lead to more serious injuries if unaddressed. A physician can write an order for skilled therapy, including physical and occupational therapy, to help rebuild strength, improve safety at home, and prevent future falls. Early intervention makes a real difference in long-term independence and well-being.

If your loved one is hospitalized and unable to speak for themselves, having the right legal documents in place—like a Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA) and Health Care Surrogate (HCS)—is critical. These documents ensure someone they trust can step in, make decisions, and access information without unnecessary delays. Without them, even well-meaning family members may face legal barriers during a medical crisis. Being prepared protects your loved one’s wishes and allows care to move forward without added stress.

If a loved one begins missing payments, paying bills multiple times, or seems confused about money management, it’s more than just forgetfulness—it may be a sign they need help. Overlooking these red flags can lead to financial trouble or even exploitation. Step in early with support, whether that’s organizing accounts, setting up safeguards, or involving a trusted advocate. A little guidance now can prevent big problems later.

Don't assume that your parent knows where their documents are. Some DPOA and HCS documents were done over 20 years ago and may be buried in a box at a storage unit. Another thing to watch for is to ensure that the persons listed as fiduciaries are still living, capable and able to step in. We had a case where these documents needed to be updated - quickly! Thankfully, the physician declared that they could update their DPOA/HCS and understood why they needed them updated. We scheduled them with their attorney and got their estate in order before it was too late. www.BrevardHealthcareNavigation.com
