I often hear from my clients that it feels unkind to hold a boundary, especially with someone they love. The truth is, having good boundaries is the most loving thing you can do.
I've heard this so many times: "If I don't do [fill in the blank] she/he will think I don't care." The truth is, we can't control what anyone else thinks or feels. But how do YOU feel when you bend your boundaries to take care of someone else?
Helpless?
Resentful?
Worried?
Bending your boundaries doesn't actually solve anything, it just transfers the discomfort from the other person to you instead.
When you hold a boundary with someone, you are really saying "I value our relationship too much to risk jeopardizing it." When you start holding your boundaries, it allows you to show up authentically and with compassion. And when you DO have space to give to others, you will be able to do it without feeling the pressure or resentment. And people can really tell when you are showing up because you want to rather than out of guilt or feeling obligated.
SO...I tell my clients holding their boundaries is the kindest thing you can do in your relationships because it prevents burnout, it prevents resentment, and it also communicates that you believe in the other person's ability to reclaim their own power.
