Our awesome doctors have been busy in and out of the office. Earlier this week when not at work, they were learning and sharing ideas at the LEAD program. Last night they shared their wisdom with eager 3rd and 4th year dental students planning for their future at UF College of Dentistry in Gainesville. 🐊

🦷 🧀 Let's chew on some interesting facts about cariogenic foods and why cheese is an exception. 🍽️👀

🍰 What are Cariogenic Foods?
Cariogenic foods are those that promote the formation of cavities (dental caries). How? Well, they contain sugars and starches that the bacteria in our mouth love to feast on. When these bacteria chow down, they produce acids that attack our tooth, leading to cavities. Typical culprits include candies, cakes, sodas, and even some fruits and cereals.

🧀 Why is Cheese Non-Cariogenic?
Now, here's a delicious twist - cheese is non-cariogenic! Yes, cheese lovers, rejoice! 🎉 But why is it so? Cheese doesn't just sit there being tasty; it fights back against cavities in several ways:

Neutralizes Acid: Cheese can help neutralize the plaque acid, which is a major factor in tooth decay.

Calcium & Phosphate: These minerals in cheese strengthen tooth enamel and help replace minerals lost due to other foods' acidic attacks.
