🌐 The Parkinson's Universe: A New Model of Care
📣 Speaker: Professor Michael Okun

Parkinson’s disease is now the fastest growing neurodegenerative disorder in the world, yet many people still face fragmented and difficult-to-navigate care systems. In this plenary session, Professor Michael S. Okun introduces the “Parkinson’s Universe,” a new framework that reimagines Parkinson’s care using the metaphor of a solar system. In this model, the person living with Parkinson’s sits at the centre, like the sun, with caregivers, healthcare professionals, social supports and specialists forming a coordinated orbit around them.

💥Fighter Friday!🥊
Say hello to John 👋

John was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2020.
He actually didn’t realize it, people told him that they noticed he was having tremors in his left hand, so he started doing research to find out what was happening.

John first heard about Rock Steady Boxing through a friend that attends our Rock Steady Boxing classes. He came to observe, joined our class and has never regretted the decision! 🥊

One of John’s biggest challenges was to be diagnosed properly.
He had to go to Gainesville for his diagnosis confirmation.

What are you finding that is most improved in your day-to-day life?
Overall, my balance and my gate, but mostly my mood! I really enjoy Rock Steady Boxing and all the other boxers and coaches!

🏓 His favorite exercise? Ping-pong!
He believes eye-hand coordination and balance are key — and we couldn’t agree more!

John’s advice for anyone newly diagnosed:

“We all have difficult times and challenges in our life. This is just another part of the journey, it might be a change in your life, but it’s not the end !!

Keep on inspiring others, John! We’re happy to see you works so hard against Parkinson’s!

💥 Fighter Friday🥊
Say hello to Julie 👋🏼

Julie was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s in February 2022

She first realized she was having a hard time with her daily activities and her memory at work and in day-to-day life.

Rock Steady Boxing 🥊 was introduced to her from some of her coworkers. They heard about it and they wanted to help her and encouraged her to check it out! ❤️
And guess what she hasn’t quit since! 😁

Her daily challenge before Rock Steady was definitely “Brain fog”She was very forgetful and realized she wasn’t moving as quickly as usual.
Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s affected her mood and her sense of humor.
After joining Rock Steady Boxing, she has definitely noticed an improvement and all of these aspects!

She said you have to learn what you can do and get out of that big black hole and not worry about the things you can’t do!

What is your favorite exercise? Not one exactly she enjoys all of them! Yay !!!

What would Julie tell someone that was newly diagnosed?
Don’t be afraid be an advocate for yourself and learn as much as you can and keep up with the latest on Parkinson’s disease and the doctors or groups that can help you!
