Thursday's thought tool-Emotions fuel thoughts which drive behaviors. State-Story-Strategy. Noticing our thoughts as one story not a fact, naming the theme (what ifs, if onlys, catastophizing), normalizing these human thought patterns, and identifying what you need to nurture yourself in the moment brings awareness and compassion.

Counselors for Change is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization piloting its global initiative in Brevard County, Florida with a mission to increase mental health awareness, education, outreach, and advocacy to youth and the collective communities of individuals and organizations that raise them in order to provide all invested entities with resources needed to actualize collective potential.
Counselors for Change is a high impact coalition of mental health professionals, community advocates, student activists, and partnering agencies dedicated to providing community events, workshops, and outreach programs to school-aged youth as well as the adults and organizations entrusted with their well-being. We define a counselor as one who advocates for the well-being of another and believe that it takes an informed, connected tribe to raise a resilient generation.
We believe that mental health is at the center of individual and collective well-being and holds the greatest capacity to create meaningful and lasting positive change in society. It is through reducing stigma, increasing programs that focus on equity and inclusion, and intentional efforts to distribute information and resources that engage and empower individuals and communities with a deeper understanding of mental health and well-being that we have the greatest impact.
The early ideas for the organization began over two decades ago when the founder, a public school educator at the time, quickly recognized the overwhelming need for and lack of counseling resources in schools. She noted that many of the challenges that surfaced in the classroom were not academic in nature and the stressors students faced within and beyond the school boundaries needed to be adequately identified and addressed for true learning and growth to take place.
She went on to earn a master's degree in counseling and post-graduate training in trauma, family systems, neuroscience, and mindfulness. Having spent years as a counselor in both nonprofit agency and private practice settings, the ideas to connect schools with the necessary mental health counseling resources began to take root.
A weekend in March 2018 would culminate in a concrete plan of action. The morning of March 24th was spent with thousands of counselors from around the globe in a ballroom in
D.C. The shared energy and desire to impact change in our country was palatable. Many left the conference to attend the March for Our Lives where students organized hundreds of thousands of supporters from across the nation and gave a collective voice to the growing violence impacting millions of families. The two events left a lasting impression and would serve as the missing puzzle piece, allowing the idea from two decades prior to take on a clear and concise plan of action.
Visually, the transition from a room with thousands of counselors to hundreds of thousands of people lining the streets of our nation’s capital formed a mental bridge between the two communities. The power of many would be the foundation of a plan. Channeling the energy and passion for change by organizing mental health professionals, schools, community advocates, and student activists with a shared vision of changing the culture of mental health would have a large and lasting impact.
Today the organization is a rapidly growing collaboration of professionally licensed marriage & family therapists, mental health counselors, clinical social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists along with community members of all ages and backgrounds committed to volunteering their expertise and time to communities and schools through counseling, workshops, and crisis response.
Whether you are a mental health professional, parent, student, business, school, or member of the community, Counselors for Change provides an opportunity to invest in the individuals and institutions with the greatest influence in changing the social-emotional climate of our nation by removing some of the obstacles that have historically impeded access to mental health education and care needed throughout a lifespan.
Your donations go directly towards providing mental health programs that increase awareness, education, outreach, and advocacy enhancing the collective well-being of individuals and communities across generations.
