Hi parents, Dr. Lockhart, Chief of Pediatrics at BHA here 👋
Let’s talk about a vaccine that doesn’t always get as much attention as it should: the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine.
Chickenpox isn’t just an itchy rash. Before the vaccine, thousands of kids were hospitalized each year due to high fevers, skin infections, pneumonia, swelling of the brain, and other serious complications.
The good news? The vaccine is very safe, and it’s the best way to protect your child from getting sick – and to protect newborns and immunocompromised family members who can’t get vaccinated yet.
If your child is due for their varicella vaccine or you’re catching up on shots, we’re here to help.
Your child’s health and comfort are always our top priority. 💙

At Brevard Health Alliance, our mission has always been bigger than medicine. It’s about creating a community where every person—every child, every parent, every neighbor—has the chance to live healthier and thrive.

Every day, we see what’s possible when compassion meets access, and when our community comes together to support those who need it most.

As we look toward the future, we’re excited for new ways to care for our communities.

Because building a healthier community doesn’t happen alone… it happens together. 💙

December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, and it is a good reminder to slow down and make safe choices before getting behind the wheel.

The holidays are full of celebrations, late nights, and travel, which means the risk of impaired driving is higher this time of year.

Alcohol, drugs, and even some medications can affect your reaction time and judgment, and the consequences can be life-changing. This season, we encourage everyone to plan ahead. Pick a designated driver, use a rideshare, call a friend, or stay where you are if you are not able to drive safely.

Speak up if someone you care about is planning to drive when they should not. Looking out for yourself and each other helps keep our roads and our community safer. A little planning can make sure everyone gets home safely and enjoys the season for all the right reasons.

As the year comes to a close, it is a good time to take a moment and check in on your health and wellness before the new year begins. December can be busy, but a little planning now can help you start the next year feeling prepared and supported.

If you take daily medications, make sure your prescriptions are refilled so you have enough to carry you through the holidays and into January. This is also a great time to schedule any appointments you may have put off during the year, whether it is a routine physical, a follow-up visit, or a screening you have been meaning to complete.

It is also helpful to review your immunizations and boosters to ensure you are up to date, especially for flu this season. Staying current protects not only you but also those around you. If your insurance is changing in the new year, take a few minutes to review your new coverage, confirm your primary care provider, and make sure you understand any updates to your plan or pharmacy benefits.

End-of-year tasks may feel small, but they can make a meaningful difference in your health and peace of mind. Taking care of these items now helps set the foundation for a healthy, confident start to the year ahead!

With the holiday season in fully swing, make sure to take the time to ensure the gifts we give and the celebrations we plan are as safe as they are fun.

Every year, thousands of children are treated for toy-related injuries, many of which can be prevented with a few simple steps.

As you shop, wrap, and celebrate this season, keep these safety tips in mind:
• Choose age-appropriate toys. Check the recommended age range, especially for infants and toddlers who are more vulnerable to choking hazards.
• Inspect toys for quality. Look for sturdy construction, smooth edges, and secure battery compartments.
• Avoid small parts for young children. Tiny pieces, loose magnets, and button batteries can pose serious risks.
• Pick non-toxic materials. This includes art supplies, paints, and craft kits.
• Pair active toys with protective gear. Scooters, bikes, and skates should always come with helmets and pads.
• Keep holiday decorations in mind. Ribbons, balloons, ornaments, and gift packaging can be dangerous if left where little ones can reach them.
• Supervise play, especially with new toys. Kids often explore in unexpected ways, and adult attention makes a difference.

By taking a few minutes to review toys and holiday setups, we can help ensure a joyful, safe, and stress-free season for families.

It’s National Handwashing Week, a perfect reminder during cold and flu season that one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your health is simply washing your hands. Clean hands help stop the spread of viruses, bacteria, and everyday germs that can cause illness, especially during the colder months when infections are more common.

Proper handwashing means using clean running water, lathering with soap, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds, including the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails, then rinsing and drying thoroughly.

It’s also important to wash your hands before eating, after using the restroom, after coughing or sneezing, after touching shared surfaces, and any time they look or feel dirty. Taking a few extra seconds to wash regularly not only protects you, but also helps keep your family, coworkers, and community healthier all season long.

This Wellness Wednesday, we recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and share the importance of accessible care for every person in our community. At BHA, we believe that wellness belongs to everyone.

This commitment means making sure individuals of all abilities can reach the care, support, and resources they need to manage their health and live fulfilling lives.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities reminds us that true wellness involves more than medical visits. It includes removing physical and communication barriers, improving accessibility in every part of the patient experience, and listening closely to the voices of individuals with disabilities as we continue to strengthen our services.

Today and every day, we are dedicated to building a healthier and more welcoming community where everyone feels supported on their wellness journey.
