Studies show that alcohol and brain health aren't a great mix - in fact, it may shrink your brain. By contrast, cannabis may help your brain.

A new study, led by researchers from University College London, is offering some of the first robust evidence showing how cannabidiol (CBD), a key compound in cannabis, increases cerebral blood flow in memory processing regions of the brain such as the hippocampus.

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is the largest receptor system in the human body. The ECS consists of cannabinoid receptors, endogenous ligand know as endocannabinoids along with their transport mechanisms and endocannabinoid metabolizing enzymes. The system functions as a self regulating harm reduction system, influencing multiple physiologic processes in the human body in response to oxidative and physiologic stress. The ECS was discovered in 1988. Interestingly, there are no receptors in the cardiac and respiratory centers of the brain stem, the areas that shut down the heart and lungs in cases of an overdose. This is the physiological reason no one has ever died of a cannabis overdose. .
So why is the ECS not studied in medical school? .
The biggest barrier is cannabis listed as a Schedule 1 drug. By definition that means there is no medicinal value, which of course limits research

Aging gracefully means protecting the aging brain and strengthening the aging body. Cannabis could have a big role to play in boosting both.

A new study in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs looked at 1000 people using cannabis and found that 65% were using for pain and of that 65%, 80% found cannabis extremely helpful with pain relief. 88% of those finding relief, were able to stop taking opioid painkillers. .
Opioids depress the respiratory system, meaning that overdoses may be fatal. .
“People develop tolerance to opioids, which means that they require higher doses to achieve the same effect. This means that chronic pain patients often increase their dose of opioid medications over time, which in turn increases their risk of overdose,” said Julia Arnsten, professor of Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Canadian researchers have found that medical cannabis is having a positive impact on patients and reducing alcohol consumption. The study surveyed 2,102 patients and the results showed: 419 (44%) reported decreases in alcohol usage frequency over 30 days; 322 (34%) had decreased the number of standard drinks consumed per week; and 76 (8%) reported no alcohol use at all in the 30 days prior to the survey taking place. Researchers concluded: “Since alcohol is the most prevalent recreational substance in North America, and its use results in significant rates of criminality, morbidity and mortality, these findings may result in improved health outcomes for medical cannabis patients, as well as overall improvements in public health and safety.” The study was published in the International Journal of Drug Policy

Research out of the University of California - San Diego shows older adults are using cannabis to treat a host of common health conditions. The study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that of 568 patients surveyed, 15% had used cannabis within the past three years, with half of users reporting using it regularly and for medical purposes. “Pain, Insomnia and Anxiety were the most common reasons for cannabis use and, for the most part, patients reported that cannabis was helping to address these issues, especially with insomnia and pain,” Christopher Kaufmann, co-author of the study and assistant professor in the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego. Kaufmann went on to say, “could cannabis be a safer alternative to treatments, such as opioids and benzodiazepines? Could cannabis help reduce the simultaneous use of multiple medications in older persons? We want to find out which conditions cannabis is most effective in treating. Only then can we better counsel older adults on cannabis use.”
