✨COLOSTRUM HARVESTING✨

Colostrum - aka "Liquid Gold" - is the first milk your body produces, and it’s packed with immune-boosting antibodies and nutrients. Frequently parents ask me about harvesting colostrum before baby arrives, and everywhere I look, I am seeing colostrum harvesting on social media. But how do you know if it's something YOU should do?

Some parents are encouraged to express and collect colostrum before birth, especially if there's a chance baby may need extra support feeding early on (like in cases of gestational diabetes, planned cesarean, or anticipated separation after birth). One instance I like to recommend colostrum harvesting is if you plan to exclusively pump for your baby.

PROS: Having a small stash of colostrum on hand can offer peace of mind. It might be helpful if your baby has trouble latching at first, experiences low blood sugar, or needs supplementation without using formula right away. It can also be an empowering way to get familiar with your breasts and practice hand expression before the whirlwind of postpartum.

CONS: For some people, collecting colostrum may feel stressful, discouraging, or unnecessary. It’s also not always easy—some people don’t get much (or any) before birth, and that’s completely normal. There can be a slight risk of triggering contractions with ni**le stimulation, so it’s best to talk to your Midwife or OB before starting, and then doing so under the guidance of a lactation professional.

At the end of the day, prenatal colostrum collection is optional. You don’t HAVE to do it to be prepared. Your body will continue to make exactly what your baby needs when they arrive. Whether you collect or not, you are doing a great job. 💛

📱 Want an IBCLC in your pocket?

Did you know that a consultation with me means free follow-up texting? Not only do I offer this to all of my face to face clients, but I also offer standalone texting services (daily, weekly, or monthly rates).

Sometimes you have a question and 3 a.m. and no one to ask... I'm your girl! Sometimes you just need a vent session... I'm your girl!

If you're interested in having a lactation consultant that not only provides individualized one on one care to you and your baby, but is also there for you in the weeks following (is this p**p normal? How long can I keep my milk on the counter again? Tell me more about power pumping) then I'm your girl!

Reach out today for a consultation or to have access to me whenever you need!

REAL tips for increasing milk supply 👇🏼

One of the biggest questions I get from clients is "How do I increase my milk supply? Will lactation cookies/supplements work?"

🔙 Let's rewind a moment and FIRST establish: what is a NORMAL supply?

Most breastfeeding babies require 25-30 oz of breastmilk per 24 hours for the first 12 months of life. On average, babies drink 3-4 oz every 2.5-4 hours (6-10 times per day). Meaning that if you are pumping "only" 3 oz every 3 hours, you are likely making the perfect amount for your baby!

If you are experiencing decreased pumping output, or your baby isn't gaining weight adequately it is VITAL to determine the root cause of the issue (poor latch, weak/inefficient suck, incorrect flange/pump settings, insufficient glandular tissue, insulin resistance, etc.) A one on one lactation consultant can help you to determine this!

🍪 Now back to the question at hand - can lactation cookies help increase your supply? The short answer, unfortunately, is probably not. Especially if the root cause is any of the above listed. Cookies may be a good way to help boost calories, and some of them do contain known galactagauges. However, these usually work best when someone isn't having issues in the first place.
