The Capital City Medical Society is the collective voice of African American physicians in Montgomery, AL. The organization is committed to improving the quality of health among minorities and disadvantaged people through its membership, professional development, and community involvement. Throughout its history, the Capital City Medical Society has focused primarily on health issues related to African Americans and medically underserved populations; however, its principles, goals, initiatives and philosophy encompass all ethnic groups. The Capital City Medical Society is also committed to increasing the number of African Americans and other underrepresented groups participating in the medical field. In 2016, the Capital City Medical Society endowed a $25,000 scholarship at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. The UAB Capital City Medical Society scholarship will benefit deserving medical students based on academic merit and financial need. This scholarship is supported by the generous contributions of Capital City Medical Society members, corporations, private philanthropic organizations, and proceeds from scholarship benefit efforts. Throughout the year, the Capital City Medical Society also partners with other community organizations in the River Region, including the Montgomery Chapter of the NAACP, The Links, Incorporated, Medical Advocacy and Outreach, The City of Saint Jude, and the Boys and Girls Club.

Each month, our medical organization sponsors a meeting for members of the Capital City Medical Society and other health care providers. Topics discussed over the past year have included Hepatitis C, Peripheral Vascular Disease, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Treatments for Varicose Veins, Congestive Heart Failure, New Treatments for HIV Prevention, Interventional Nephrology, and Psoriasis and Hidradenitis Suppurativa in Skin of Color.

We are proud to share that Dr. Porcia Love, CCMS member and past president, presented a proclamation to Misty Copeland during her visit to Montgomery. 🩰 Misty Copeland, a world-renowned ballerina and the first Black female principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, was in town for "An Evening with Misty Copeland," presented by the Alabama Dance Theatre. We celebrate this moment highlighting excellence, artistry, and representation!

We are incredibly proud that members of the Capital City Medical Society have been past honorees at the annual Women in Training, Inc. Mother-Daughter Brunch, including Dr. Marguerite Barber-Owens and Dr. Burnestine Taylor. Their recognition reflects the leadership, service, and impact our physicians continue to make in this community.

This year's WIT Mother-Daughter Brunch, hosted by Rolanda Hollis, Chairwoman of Women in Training, Inc., will take place on March 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel and Spa at the Convention Center.

This Women’s History Month celebration not only honors women and girls, but also raises funds for the WITKITS Campaign, helping fight period poverty by providing hygiene products and education to girls in need.

We encourage our members and community to attend, support this important cause, and continue uplifting the women who lead and serve every day. 💛
