The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) is aware of reports of hantavirus cases among persons who recently traveled on the MV Hondius cruise ship. ADPH, along with health officials at the CDC and other public health agencies are working together to monitor the situation and help people who may have been exposed. The U.S. public health system is prepared to identify and respond to cases if needed. ADPH has not identified any Alabama residents among persons on the cruise ship, and there are currently no known cases connected to Alabama.
Most importantly, the risk to the general public remains extremely low. Person‑to‑person transmission of Andes hantavirus is rare in the U.S. and is typically associated with contact with rodents, such as rats and mice, especially when exposed to their urine, droppings, or saliva. ADPH encourages residents to follow standard public health precautions when traveling and when cleaning areas where rodents may be present.
