📕There are always stories that stay with us…

One of my favorite parts of this job is the incredible stories we hear along the way. One individual that stands out was a woman whose daughter came in with her for a hearing aid consultation. The daughter was worried her mom had become withdrawn and quiet, especially at their weekly family dinners.

After being fit with hearing aids, they came back for a follow-up, both grinning from ear to ear when I called them back for their appointment. The daughter shared that at their last dinner, her mom was smiling more, recalling conversations, and asking follow-up questions. 🥰

🦜🐘There is a wild world out there in animal hearing…

👂Animals may not use spoken language like humans, but they’re AMAZING communicators! Elephants flap their ears and rumble to greet each other, s***m whales change their clicks depending on their audience, and we all know how well our pets "talk" to us. 🐕🐱

Some animals even mimic other species! The African drongo, for example, copies distress calls from different animals to trick them into dropping their food, pretty sneaky! 🐦💨

Your pets might not be that devious, but they’re definitely listening, so be careful what you say!

🤯Did you know that very few states actually mandate hearing aid coverage?

📍20 states currently require hearing aid coverage for children, but only 6 states mandate coverage for adults.

💡The good news? Many private insurance plans, managed care plans, and Medicare Advantage programs DO offer hearing aid benefit! But coverage amounts and timelines vary widely. For example:

💸 One plan might offer $1500 total toward hearing aids every 3 years

🏥 Another plan may cover 60% of the cost after your deductible is met

🚨 Think over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids are the best option? Think again!

📋The other day a patient brought me a list of “best hearing aids approved by audiologists” that they pulled from a quick Google search. While their quick internet search curated what appeared to them as a thorough list, 6 of the 7 devices were NOT prescription hearing aids. The majority of products listed were over-the-counter (OTC) products, which are only designed for mild hearing loss. OTC devices are also not intended for individuals under 18, and they won’t provide a customized fit or professional support. If you have more than mild hearing loss, or need a tailored solution, OTC devices may not be the best choice for your needs.
