Meet Madgie Lashee

"I am excited to share that I have been selected as a representative for the 2026 Women in Blue campaign! This initiative, supporting the Cancer Wellness Foundation of Central Alabama, brings together women leaders to shine a light on colorectal cancer awareness and the importance of early detection.

While I haven't personally lost a family member to colon cancer, my family is no stranger to the physical and emotional toll cancer takes. I still carry the memory of losing my beloved grandmother to lung cancer, and I’ve watched with pride as my father-in-law and one of my closest friends fought their battles with incredible courage and resilience. Having seen the fear and exhaustion firsthand, I am more committed than ever to advocacy. These experiences have shaped my heart and strengthened my resolve to fight back.

Why your support matters:

The funds we raise provide critical services for patients across 32 counties in Central Alabama, including transportation to life-saving treatments; “The Wig Gig,” which offers free wigs to cancer patients experiencing hair loss due to treatment; advocacy for essential medications, helping patients access millions in assistance; and nutritional counseling and supplements to help patients maintain their strength.

Thank you for standing with me and the Cancer Wellness Foundation of Central Alabama team to empower lives through prevention and care."

Meet Dr. Brenda DeRamus-Coleman

"Colorectal cancer touched our family, but it did not define us.

Our lives were rocked in late summer of 2023 when my brother-in-law was diagnosed with late stage colon cancer. Warren Leon Davis, III was married to my sister, Dr. Tyna Davis, for 61 years. He was another big brother and we had a very strong bond and family relationship. He was a strong, intelligent, hardworking Christian gentleman. He faced his battle with dignity and fortitude. He was not only a patient, he was a deacon, a social activist, a family man, an educator, and a supporter of others. His life was rooted in service, and even in illness, his faith and character never wavered.

When cancer entered our lives, it did not belong to just one person. It became a family battle. Along with the medical professionals, Warren and Tyna, their son, daughter, and grandchildren, we were armed and ready for battle. We fought together, advocating, asking questions, seeking good quality care, and cherishing every moment of time we were given. Through it all, we lived with hope.

Our faith held us and kept us grounded when the path was frightening and uncertain. Prayer sustained us when words fell short. We trusted God, not because the outcome was clear, but because His presence was constant.

Colorectal cancer moves fast. This truth, though extremely painful, is important. Our loss was swift. No, the DeRamus and Davis families cannot change our outcome, but we can work to affect what happens for others. This campaign allows me to do something. It allows our family's journey to become a message of urgency, awareness, and love. If sharing our journey encourages one person to get screened, one family to ask questions, or one life to be spared unnecessary loss, then a valued legacy continues. We choose hope. We choose action. We choose to honor the life of Warren Leon Davis, III by helping others to live."

Meet Cindi Pittman

"There are few things scarier than hearing the ‘C word’ from your doctor. Whether it is you or a loved one, it is terrifying. My personal experience began several years ago when my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer. She recovered from surgery and was doing well until it reared its ugly head again two years ago. My wonderful, beautiful mother passed away a year ago this month, and I miss her every single day.

I have spent 26 years of my career working around cancer patients—first at the Montgomery Cancer Center and now at Central Alabama Radiation Oncology. I have seen the toll—physically, emotionally, and financially—that comes with fighting this awful disease. But I have also witnessed incredible strength from patients and their families.

I could not be more honored to be a Woman in Blue this year. The assistance the Cancer Wellness Foundation provides to patients in need is invaluable. The battle is hard enough without worrying about transportation to treatments or how to afford medication. I am proud to be part of this fundraiser in honor of my mother and the many patients I have been blessed to know. Thank you to Carol Gunter for thinking of me and to everyone who supports this extraordinary cause."

Meet Hobbie Dees

"Cancer does not discriminate. It does not care who you are, what you have done, or how deeply you are loved. It invades lives without warning and leaves behind heartbreak that never fully fades. Every one of us has been touched by this disease in some way. And every one of us has a reason to fight.

Through the Women in Blue Campaign, we have an opportunity to turn our pain into purpose.

Courtney Pruitt — the daughter of my lifelong friend — was a light in this world. An incredible young woman with her whole future ahead of her. In April 2018, she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Instead of celebrating the milestones of her senior year, she spent it fighting for her life in a children’s hospital. On May 9, 2019, Courtney lost her battle. The world lost a beautiful soul, and those of us who loved her have never been the same.

Conrad Naftel was truly one of a kind — generous, compassionate, and loved by so many. His cancer diagnosis was shocking and devastating. Cancer does not play fair.

There are so many names and faces that live in my heart. For each of them, I choose to fight. I choose to raise funds. I choose to stand up against a disease that has taken too much from too many.

We cannot bring them back. But we can honor them. We can refuse to let their stories end in silence. We can channel our grief into action and our love into impact.

Together, through Women in Blue, we fight."

Meet Jessica Trotman

"Cancer has a way of changing the meaning of time. It turns ordinary days into moments you replay, and future plans into things you promise yourself you will appreciate more deeply. Over the past year, cancer has taken two dear friends. Watching their journeys was equal parts courage and heartbreak. Their absence is something I feel in everyday places. Losing them has forced me to confront how relentless cancer can be – not just for those diagnosed but for everyone who loves them. It also showed me how much support matters. The research, treatments, and supporting services all exist because people before us chose to give, to fundraise, and to believe that progress was possible. Raising funds is one way to turn grief into action. It is how we honor those we’ve lost by fighting for those still here. This is for my friends, their families, and for the belief that one day fewer stories will end the way theirs did."

Meet Gloria Locklin

"I am so incredibly honored to be a 2026 nominee for the Women in Blue Campaign for the Cancer Wellness Foundation. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and I will wear my blue to help raise money for the services of this remarkable organization.

Colon Cancer affects so many lives and this resonates personally with me because my husband, Larry Locklin, is a Colon Cancer Survivor. After three years, we are so thankful for the word…SURVIVOR!!

What began his journey was some unpleasant symptoms that would not go away. After several tests and a failed colonoscopy because of an extreme blockage, he required surgery. In September 2022, he had a very tedious surgical procedure performed at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham and was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. It was shocking news to us. We learned firsthand that cancer changes everything.

At Cancer Care, Larry began an intensive chemotherapy program for 6 months. At each treatment he would be connected for 3 hours of chemo and then come home with a chemo port for an additional 72 hours. It was difficult to watch this for 6 months but he was such a faithful trooper. He never gave up, gave in, or gave out as he continued to fight for his life. We now rejoice in knowing Larry has been blessed by hearing the news “Colon Cancer Free” and celebrating by ringing the bell. Today he continues yearly appointments, scans, blood work, x-rays, and most importantly, colonoscopy screenings. Early detection is so very important.

However, Colon Cancer was not his first cancer. It was Lung Cancer. After being monitored for 5 years, the tumor showed significant growth and had to be removed. At UAB, he underwent robotic surgery and remarkably the cancer had not spread. He walked away from this diagnosis with surgery and recovery only, completely healed and no additional treatments. He has been tremendously blessed.

His third cancer was diagnosed at the end of his Colon treatment. At the end of 2023, it was Prostate Cancer. Because of his age, surgery was not an option. He completed 30 units of radiation and continues with Lupron injections every 3 months, monthly blood work, PET scans, and infusions to protect his bones. We continue to pray to hear the words, “No New Cancer.” That is the sweetest sound to our ears.

Cancer truly does not discriminate. Before Larry’s journey began, my older brother, Philip Head, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. He fought bravely for 19 months. After a long and painful battle, he passed away surrounded by family and friends who loved him dearly. His strength and courage continue to inspire us.

Being recognized with this compassionate group of ladies as a 2026 Woman in Blue and as the wife of a Colon Cancer Survivor, I urge you to give generously to this campaign. Every contribution, big or small, has the power to provide hope, relief, and strength to those in need. Together, we can do more."

Meet Christy Cronier

"For years I’ve followed the Women in Blue Campaign and supported friends in their campaigns. This year, I’m honored to support the Cancer Wellness Foundation in a new way—as a Women in Blue nominee myself.

The Cancer Wellness Foundation does far more than most people realize. They provide financial help and practical resources to people facing a cancer diagnosis, including nutritional products for those at risk of malnutrition, help with copays, medically prescribed garments, wigs, medications, and transportation to and from appointments. They walk alongside patients through the everyday challenges that come with cancer.

I am especially focused on bringing more awareness to colorectal cancer because I am at higher risk due to my family history. In July 2024, I lost my precious grandmother after a brief battle with stage 4 colon cancer. In January 2026, my great aunt also passed away after a short fight with colon cancer. Both of these strong women likely battled symptoms quietly before they were diagnosed. Routine screenings are so important, as colon cancer often goes unnoticed in its early stages.

I’ve tried to be proactive with my own screenings. I even joked with my gastroenterologist that while the colonoscopy isn’t exactly fun to think about, sometimes you just have to ‘get uncomfortable to get comfortable.’

I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve as a 2026 Woman in Blue and hope to raise funds, increase awareness about early detection, and support families in our community."

The Cancer Wellness Foundation of Central Alabama

Giving Help, Giving Hope is the motto of the Cancer Wellness Foundation, and that is exactly what we do each and every day.

The Cancer Wellness Foundation of Central Alabama help cancer patients and their families when they need it the most – when they are battling cancer. We ensure that patients have the transportation to get to life-saving treatments and doctor visits. We also advocate for the benefit of patients to ensure they receive the medications critical to their cancer care and provide nutritional counseling to help our patients keep up their strength as they wage the battles of their lives. These services are not duplicated by any other organization in the area.

Some organizations seek to fund cancer research; other focus on testing and early detection. The Cancer Wellness Foundation fills the gap in service provision once a cancer diagnosis has been made. We advocate for all patients regardless of their insurance status or income level.

The Cancer Wellness Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to helping cancer patients. The Foundation supported solely through the efforts and contributions of businesses, organizations and individuals. Every dollar contributed to the Foundation is used in the Montgomery and Central Alabama area. That means your donations are used to help your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.
