Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities

Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities We promote independence, advocacy, productivity, and inclusion for Alabamians with developmental disabilities.

Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities (ACDD) has a mission to support
• independence,
• advocacy,
• productivity, and
• inclusion for Alabamians with developmental disabilities. ACDD is dedicated to the vision that all Alabamians, regardless of disability, will live, learn, work, and play in inclusive communities. In 2012, ACDD and its partners supported projects that would affect positive outcomes. Under authority granted under the Developmental Disabilities Act and Bill of Rights
(P.L.106-402), the ACDD provides funding consistent with the ACDD 2011-2016
State Plan. During 2012 ACDD provided over $2 million to advance its mission and vision. As a result of the Council’s projects and initiatives, individuals and families have experienced more access to the many spheres of human life. The Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities is enthusiastic about this progress and is eager to see what future years will hold for people with developmental disabilities as the Council, alongside of various members of the community, continues to advocate for equality of opportunity for all of Alabama’s citizens.

Vivian’s life changed during college after a serious injury that left her using a wheelchair.

After months of recovery, she returned to school, pushing her wheelchair several blocks to class every day. That determination shaped the rest of her life.

Vivian later became involved in disability advocacy and saw firsthand how policy and community action can improve accessibility and inclusion.

Today, she continues giving back, including helping young children learn how to read.

During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Vivian’s story shows the power of advocates speaking up for their rights and the rights of others.

Watch ACDD Executive Director, Darryle Powell, share a few thoughts on this year’s Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month theme, “We’re Here. Then. Now. Always.”

The theme is led by the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) and highlights the long history of disability advocacy and community leadership.

This month is Developmental Disabilities Month to break down barriers and recognize the contributions those with developmental disabilities make in our society.

Graphic from the Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities announcing “March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month” with the theme “We’re Here. Then. Now. Always.” The design features three people with disabilities: a man using a wheelchair looking to the side, a man in a red plaid shirt smiling at the camera, and a woman wearing a high-visibility vest facing forward. The background uses coral and navy colors with the council’s logo at the top.
