Today! MRC had the privilege of pouring into an amazing group at First Congregational Christian Church’s Senior Ministry. 💜

We talked about something that often goes unspoken—interpersonal violence in our communities and how we can protect, support, and uplift one another.

Grateful for spaces that are open, honest, and ready to learn.

What better time to enact real change that will affect crime victims across Alabama? During our first Alabama Crime Victims' Rights Month! The new application cap on Alabama Crime Victims Compensation claims will be TWO years instead of one.

Thank you to Representative Russell Bedsole and Senator Lance Bell for understanding the gravity of this change. Special thanks to Darlene Hutchinson Biehl for pushing to the very end with hours to spare to make sure that this legislation passed. Without her vision and persistence this lifeline to crime victims would not be a reality.

We are currently collecting agency information. If you provide services to crime victims, please go to: https://vocalonline.org/avap/ and complete the form with your information.

Sharing with these agencies:
The Children’s Place, St. Clair Children’s Advocacy Center

The legislation prioritizes restitution that is paid to victims instead of allocating the money to the courts or to district attorneys.

🧠 March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month

For many survivors of domestic violence, the begins with a strangulation assault.
Strangulation is a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) that happens when oxygen to the brain is cut off or restricted. Strangulation can lead to lasting neurological damage, even when there are no visible marks on the skin. The Institute works hard to train professionals to recognize the signs and symptoms of strangulation in adults and children.

We’re joining Crime Stoppers and The Wellness Connect for a community conversation on “The Quiet Crisis: Understanding Interpersonal Violence in Our Communities.”

Together we will be discussing how to recognize warning signs of abuse, protect vulnerable individuals, and strengthen community awareness around violence prevention and healing.
Thank you to Beta Sigma Phi for the opportunity to share this important discussion.
