Today is the start of Black Maternal Health Week, an annual campaign founded and led by Black Mamas Matter Alliance. We are partnering with New Haven Healthy Start in hosting the Diaper Drive & Diaper Fund to help mothers in New Haven, especially black mothers, access baby essentials during this turbulent time.
Black women have long been the abused backbone of American society. Between 2013 and 2017, black women in Connecticut were 3.24 times more likely to die at childbirth compared to white women. In 2019, black infants in the state died at 2.18 times the rate of white infants, and the preterm birth rate among the state’s black population was 42% higher than those of other racial/ethnic groups.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the racial inequities embedded in our society, specifically for the health of black moms. While many of us have understandably turned inward, please consider donating to our Diaper Drive or Fund. Anything helps. The drive will be going on from today to Friday, April 17.

If you know of any resources available for pregnant women during CoVid19, feel free to share with us here: https://bit.ly/2JUtk8H. We will send share this with our community.

For over a century, the rate of maternal mortality among black women has been 3-4 times higher than that of white women.
