Message from Yale Black Men's Union:

Help us get Google Chromebooks to the kids of New Haven’s Public Schools System! Nearly 200 New Haven Public School students lack access to a computer at home. To help level the playing field, the Yale Black Men’s Union is partnering with the Zeta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Nu Gamma chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. to launch the campaign.

(link to donate: https://www.gofundme.com/f/providing-computers-for-students-in-need).

Please help us reach our goal of raising $10,000 by May 31 by accessing the GoFundMe link in our bio. Thank you for your time and consideration and stay safe!

"Black women have been the subject of the most horrid, false, and damaging narrative—the myth of the “welfare queen”—which depicts them as promiscuous, dishonest and undeserving of public benefit programs. Politicians have used this narrative to systematically dismantle and divest from our social safety net. And this narrative also places hurdles in the movement toward Guaranteed Income.

The racist myth of the welfare queen was profoundly consequential in advancing its insidious narrative—so much so that it made the face of poverty synonymous with Black women. This in turn made it easier to believe that poor people were lazy, constantly looking for ways to cheat the system, and could not be trusted."

"COVID-19 is showing us that we need more than a temporary fix for our societal structures. Naming and addressing the deep-seated racist narratives that created these entrenched inequities is the first step to building the public and political will to correct them. Centering the experiences and needs of Black women should be our future-forward strategy for ensuring economic justice for all."

It is increasingly clear that what people need most is a direct, sustained, unrestricted cash benefit. The question on many people’s mind is, “How do we get there?” The answer: Start with Black women.

BMHW Day 4:

View in graphics how hospitals are failing new moms and read from women as they share their near-death pregnancy experiences. The US has the highest maternal death rate among the world's developed nations. Everywhere else, the death rate has been stable or falling. In the US, it's been getting worse.

Today is the start of Black Maternal Health Week, an annual campaign founded and led by Black Mamas Matter Alliance. We are partnering with New Haven Healthy Start in hosting the Diaper Drive & Diaper Fund to help mothers in New Haven, especially black mothers, access baby essentials during this turbulent time.

Black women have long been the abused backbone of American society. Between 2013 and 2017, black women in Connecticut were 3.24 times more likely to die at childbirth compared to white women. In 2019, black infants in the state died at 2.18 times the rate of white infants, and the preterm birth rate among the state’s black population was 42% higher than those of other racial/ethnic groups.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the racial inequities embedded in our society, specifically for the health of black moms. While many of us have understandably turned inward, please consider donating to our Diaper Drive or Fund. Anything helps. The drive will be going on from today to Friday, April 17.

[image description]: “New Haven Healthy Start and Womxn of Color for Maternal & Child Health are pleased to host the first annual Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW). Founded and led by Black Mamas Matter Alliance, this annual campaign takes place every year from April 11-17 to deepen national conversations about black maternal health.

For over a century, the rate of maternal mortality among black women has been 3-4 times higher than that of white women. Between 2013 and 2017, black women in Connecticut were 3.24 times more likely to die at childbirth compared to white women. In 2019, black infants in the state died at 2.18 times the rate of white infants, and the preterm birth rate among the state’s black population was 42% higher than those of other racial/ethnic groups.”
