Global Smile Foundation

Global Smile Foundation Our vision is a world where no one suffers from untreated cleft.

We provide humanitarian cleft care and provider training in the global south to promote universal access to comprehensive cleft care. In addition to surgical cleft care, GSF provides comprehensive, family-centered care in the areas of education, nutrition, speech therapy, psychosocial consultations, and dentistry. GSF engages with the local medical community in each country to provide follow-up care and ensure long-term sustainability.

For 21 years, our work in El Salvador has been anchored at Benjamin Bloom National Children’s Hospital—a partnership built on trust, continuity, and shared leadership.

Since our founding, Dr. Patricia CalderĂłn, Chief of Surgery at Benjamin Bloom, has been a central partner in this work and continues to lead today. That consistency has shaped how the partnership has grown and what has been possible together.

A dedicated international surgical team—led by Dr. Krishna Patel, Dr. Chris Brooks, and Dr. Lauren Kilpatrick—works alongside colleagues at Bloom, building the trust that allows teams to collaborate when cases are most complex.

Yesterday, that partnership came to life with Bloom’s first Tessier cleft surgery—a rare and highly complex craniofacial condition that extends beyond the lip and palate and requires advanced planning and true teamwork.

This is what long-term capacity building looks like: local leadership at the center, supported by enduring partnerships that expand what’s possible for children.

A few resolutions for the New Year. ✨

As 2026 begins, we’re naming the commitments we carry forward:
. . Doing the work that endures—training providers in low- and middle-income countries, strengthening comprehensive cleft care beyond surgery, and continuing to research, publish, and share what we learn with the global cleft community. Because progress happens together.

From South America to the Middle East, our teams support cleft care and training around the world. This year, that commitment includes bringing providers from across Africa (and the world) together in Cape Town, South Africa for advanced training and shared learning.

Thank you for being part of the community that makes responsible cleft care possible. 🤍

Yousef’s parents sent us this adorable photo yesterday—and we had to share it with our incredible community here. 💛

This first one is Yousef today.
Swipe to see him five years ago, when he came to us as a baby born with a cleft condition.

This is what Season of Smiles is about. Care that reaches beyond a single moment, and support that makes space for children to grow, celebrate, and simply be kids.

Thank you for being part of this work and helping make moments like this possible—during the holidays and all year long. ✨

This Season of Smiles, this is how change lasts. ❄️

Monthly giving sustains care beyond a single moment—supporting children through surgery, follow-ups, dental care, speech therapy, and everything that comes after.

It’s not about one day.
It’s about being there every month.

Quiet. Consistent. Impactful

Twins don’t do anything halfway.
They feel it all—together. 👯‍♀️

Meet Brisa and her twin sister.
Same birthday. Same bond.
One shared journey.

Brisa was born with a cleft condition—something more than 200,000 babies around the world experience each year. And while the diagnosis belonged to one, the journey belonged to both.

We’re honored to be part of their story, supporting Brisa’s cleft care with the long-term surgical, dental, and speech support that helps kids grow up confident—side by side with the people who know them best.

Because when you’re a twin, nothing is ever just yours alone.

Season of Smiles begins today.
Our Season of Smiles campaign is all about spreading hope, healing, and long-term support to children born with cleft conditions around the world.

Each year, more than 200,000 babies are born with cleft lip and palate—yet far too many do not have access to safe, high-quality surgical care. This holiday season, your support can change that.

From now through December 31, Global Smile Foundation is raising funds to provide comprehensive cleft care. That means more than one surgery—it’s years of dental, orthodontic, nutritional, and psychological support. Healing is a journey, and your gift helps make the full continuum of care possible.

Your holiday generosity brings sustainable, high-quality care to communities where it’s needed most.

Join us in making this a true Season of Smiles.

Day 1 of CCCW2025 is underway in Cartagena — and the energy in the room is unmistakable.

What’s standing out today isn’t the size of the crowd — it’s the purpose bringing everyone together.

Providers, researchers, global health experts, educators, partners, and NGOs from across the world are here because we’re all working toward the same goal:

To make cleft care stronger and more consistent for children in low- and middle-income countries.

For too many families, access still depends on geography.
And changing that reality takes more than one team or one organization — it takes all of us sharing what works, learning from different systems, and pushing the field forward together.

That’s what today looks like: real collaboration, open exchange, and a shared commitment to raising the standard of care everywhere.

Day 1 is setting the tone — and the work ahead is both urgent and full of hope.

Our Global Smile Foundation–Peru volunteers are reaching 1,700 students (ages 6–13) with dental hygiene kits and hands-on lessons on how good oral practices support overall well-being. By equipping kids early with knowledge and tools, we’re helping prevent the illnesses tied to poor oral hygiene and building brighter futures.

A heartfelt thank you to Colgate for generously providing the kits, and to every volunteer and supporter who made this campaign possible. Your dedication transforms lives and brings hope. 🇵🇪✨

We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Berberi and the senior leadership at the Lebanese University School of Dental Medicine to renew our collaborative agreement—further strengthening our commitment to delivering compassionate cleft care and advancing research together. 💙
As we reflected on our shared achievements and set new goals, we also began planning an exciting workshop on Oral Health slated for April 2026. This partnership builds on our ongoing collaboration with LU that already provides life-changing dental and orthodontic services to children born with cleft lip and palate.
Thank you to everyone who continues to believe in our mission and supports our efforts to bring healthier smiles and brighter futures to families in need. Here’s to the next chapter of this meaningful journey! ✨

Transforming Lives

Our mission is to provide comprehensive cleft care for patients born with cleft lip and palate in underserved communities throughout the world.

Global Smile Foundation (GSF) is dedicated to making first-class cleft care accessible to all patients regardless of geographic or socioeconomic barriers. There is a pressing need for sustainable cleft care in developing countries where the consequences of those conditions are devastating, if left untreated.

For the past 32 years, GSF founders and volunteers have been committed to developing and implementing comprehensive outreach cleft care programs with a focus on quality care coupled with empowerment and sustainability initiatives for local healthcare providers. This has resulted in our patient population having the confidence and tools to be productive members of their societies.
