Groundbreaking Heart Research from UCI Radiological Sciences

UC Irvine Professor of Radiological Sciences Arash Kheradvar and colleagues have discovered fundamental differences between two major causes of mitral valve stenosis (heart valve narrowing).

Using advanced 3D ultrasound imaging and patient-specific laboratory modeling, the team found that MAC-related stenosis behaves very differently from rheumatic stenosis—challenging decades of "one-size-fits-all" diagnostic approaches.

Key Finding: Patients with MAC can appear to have reasonably sized valve openings on imaging yet experience pressure gradients indicating much more severe obstruction.

Published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, this research could help clinicians tailor treatment decisions for millions of patients.
