The Surgical Molecular Innovation LaboratoriES (SMILES), supported by the Urology Lab Fund, is a translational research-focused unit within the Department of Urology, aiming to advance urologic care through the integration of molecular biology, analytical chemistry, chemical biology, biotechnologies and surgical insight. By adopting emerging technologies and integrating close collaboration between clinicians and PhD scientists, SMILES translates mechanistic discovery into meaningful surgical innovation while cultivating a future generation of physician-scientists. At SMILES, physicians and PhD scientists work side by side in a truly integrated research environment. Clinical insight defines the questions that matter, while rigorous molecular science provides the tools to answer them.

Through excellence and leadership in patient care, education, and research, the UC Irvine Department of Urology provides its patients with the absolute best in innovative, less invasive urological care; its residents with a superb curriculum based on educational and operative training experience; and its faculty with every opportunity to excel clinically while teaching and pursuing research both a basic and clinical nature. During next week’s Giving Day, our department is highlighting Female Urology Research & Education, the Urology Excellence Fund, and the Surgical Molecular Innovation LaboratoriES (SMILES) Lab.

Thanks to a generous donor, there is an opportunity to make an even greater impact in a two-stage challenge: the first 50 gifts of any size will unlock $500,000, and another $500,000 unlocks once 100 total gifts are reached. Join Dr. Keith Rourke and the UCI Health team for CAPRI (continence after prostatectomy – recovery and instruction), a free monthly workshop focused on continence recovery after prostatectomy.

This virtual session is designed for patients at any stage of the prostate cancer journey, including pre-operative, post-operative, and long-term recovery, as well as families and allied health professionals. Attendees will hear from experts in pelvic floor physical therapy, reconstructive urology, and integrative oncology, with practical guidance on recovery, continence strategies, and overall wellness.

Sessions are held via Zoom on select Tuesdays from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Registration is required.
