During Janet Slinkard’s battle with oropharynx cancer, the impending birth of her granddaughter gave her fuel. One year after finishing treatment, she’s grateful to be celebrating Mother’s Day with her daughter Eljiah and granddaughter Evelyn, now 1.

Slinkard credits UCI Health and her team of doctors — Tjoa, radiation oncologist Dr. Quoc-Anh Ho and medical oncologist Dr. Rupali K. Nabar — with saving her life.

“Because of them, I get to watch my granddaughter grow up.”

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers — but only if we stay proactive.

HPV vaccination and regular screening starting as early as age 21 can significantly reduce risk and improve outcomes. New options, like HPV self-collection, are also helping remove barriers to care.
Prevention doesn’t happen once — it happens over time. Staying engaged in screening matters.

Lung cancer remains the deadliest cancer for both U.S. men and women, mostly because it is detected too late.

At the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, thoracic surgeon Dr. Hari B. Keshava is studying a group that often falls outside current screening guidelines: people who have never — or rarely — smoked. Yet up to 20% of lung cancers occur in this population.

Through a clinical research study, Dr. Keshava and his team are screening immediate family members of patients with gene-driven lung cancer, with the goal of detecting the disease earlier, when it is most treatable.
