The UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Institute and Ambulatory Care Center and the UCI Health – Irvine acute care hospital are now connected through an innovative surgical megafloor.

UCI Health CEO and president Chad T. Lefteris and vice president of perioperative services Mara Rosalsky, RN, MSN, recently broke through the wall that had previously separated the surgical floor in half while the hospital was built. Located on the garden level, the floor is the size of three football fields side-by-side.

Grateful to be alive after being treated by UCI Health specialists for late-stage appendix cancer, Kat Kitchen and her daughter are volunteering at the UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge. She and her daughter will offer anti-inflammatory light therapy at the Oct. 11 event.

As the second anniversary of her Oct. 6 surgery approaches, a date she now considers her new birthday, Kitchen says she feels like the Energizer bunny and considers herself blessed for the "exceptional care” she received. “If it wasn’t for Dr. Zell and Dr. Senthil, I wouldn’t be here today.”

A new study led by UCI Health urologist Dr. Michael A. Daneshvar has found that adults who abuse or have a dependence on cannabis might have an increased risk of developing bladder, kidney or prostate cancer.

“Given that cannabis is recognized as the most used illicit substance in the U.S., along with a rise in use worldwide, understanding the association between its use and the risk of urologic malignancies is of great importance.”

Receiving a cancer diagnosis, navigating treatment options and other support services can be overwhelming for patients and their families, especially those from culturally diverse communities.

“At the hospital, patients and their families receive a lot of information in a short period of time, which can be overwhelming. This program allows me to provide families with specialized guidance and additional support in a more familiar environment,” says UCI Health radiation oncologist Dr. David Hong.

Long-distance cyclist Patrick Johnson was set to ride the Anti-Cancer Challenge in fall 2022 when he was unexpectedly diagnosed with prostate cancer after a routine test. Fortunately, it was caught early and UCI Health surgeon Dr. David Lee was able to remove it. Johnson remains cancer free and determined to raise awareness and research funds for the disease at the upcoming Anti-Cancer Challenge on Oct. 11.

Men need to be proactive about their health and get tested, urges Johnson. “Catching it early allowed me to choose aggressive treatment. I wasn't going to wait and see what would happen.”
