The five-story, 225,000-square-foot UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center has cared for over 50,000 patients since it opened its doors in July 2024. Key to the new center’s approach is its emphasis on seamless and complete cancer care. Patients can see all their providers in one visit and receive services ranging from imaging, infusions and radiation treatment to state-of-the-art surgery, all conveniently located in one building.

UCI Health and the Anaheim Ducks celebrated Lunar New Year at the Honda Center this week, taking time to recognize survivor Megan Yoo Schneider.

Megan received care from the gynecologic oncology program at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Today, she is cancer-free and has become a dedicated supporter of the Anti-Cancer Challenge. She was ACC patient honoree in 2024.

UCI Health gynecological oncologist Dr. Krishnansu Tewari was able to join Megan and her family for the special night.

At the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, researchers are developing artificial intelligence algorithms that seamlessly integrate with existing imaging systems to analyze thousands of MRI images, providing cancer specialists with clear views of tumors that otherwise would go undetected.

“It is a testament to the innovation happening right here at UC Irvine, where we are turning groundbreaking research into renewed hope for patients and their loved ones,” says UCI Health neuroradiologist Peter D. Chang, founding director of the Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence Research.

UCI Health radiation oncologist Dr. Priya Mitra recently joined non-profit organization Radiating Hope on a medical mission to Ethiopia. She spent a week at the Jimma University Oncology Center, to provide training on brachytherapy, a lifesaving treatment for women with advanced cervical cancer. Their new HDR brachytherapy machine was only the second in a country of 120 million people.

The first brachytherapy patient was treated on the third day. "Everybody started clapping afterwards,” Mitra says. “It was heartwarming, and the patient was super grateful, as was her husband.”
