At just five days old, baby Emery was diagnosed with an extremely rare mitochondrial disorder that affects only a handful of children worldwide.

Despite the rarity of the disease, Emery is the fifth patient CHOC has treated for the her specific gene defect. CHOC is home to one of the nation’s few mitochondrial metabolic research labs, where a highly specialized metabolic team—alongside more than a dozen expert specialists—is working collaboratively to give Emery the best possible chance at survival.

Thanks to rapid genome sequencing, round-the-clock care, and the unwavering strength of her loving family, Emery recently celebrated her first birthday — a milestone once thought impossible.
