Clayton Moore is on a mission to demystify living-donor kidney transplants. In June, the 26-year-old gifted his kidney to a complete stranger and he couldn’t be happier about his decision.

Living-donor kidney transplant is the gold standard for end-stage renal disease, says UCI Health transplant surgeon Dr. Christina Papageorge, who removed Moore’s kidney for transplantation.

“They offer better long-term outcomes, faster recovery and no wait times,” she says. “A living-donor kidney, on average, will last twice as long as one received from a deceased donor.”

2025 UCI Transplant Team Holiday Party! It’s been an exciting year for our department with tremendous growth. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and help our patients receive life saving organ transplants.

Motivated to inspire others, Mark Maselli ran the Las Vegas Marathon less than one year after his kidney transplant at UCI Health. With a warrior mindset he hopes to be an example of what a transplant patient can do when they put their mind to it.

Mark decided to run a marathon as a way to be an example of what a person can do if they have the right mindset and willpower to take action. Mark wanted to inspire others to take control of their disease and not let their perceived limitations keep them from LIVING their life versus SURVIVING their life. His big thing is that a disease (ailments, afflictions, etc.) does not define who we are or what we can do. Mark has lost family members to polycystic kidney disease, and when he was diagnosed, he made the CHOICE to not fall victim to the disease, but take control, do the things he needed to do to ensure he could avoid dialysis and live his life.
