IBS and Sleep impact each other!

Here’s how 👇🏻

IBS CAN IMPACT SLEEP
😯 40% of people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) report having sleep problems.

😖 IBS symptoms, such as abdominal pain and diarrhea, can interrupt sleep patterns and consequently cause sleep problems.
.. BUT SLEEP CAN ALSO IMPACT IBS 👇🏻
A bad night's sleep may lead to a bad IBS day: morning IBS symptoms appear to be related to the quality of your sleep the night before.

Here are some of top TIPS TO IMPROVE SLEEP WITH IBS
1️⃣ Maintain a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.
2️⃣ Exercise for at least 20 minutes per day.
3️⃣ Get exposure to natural light during the day and darkness at night to regulate your circadian rhythm
4️⃣ Limit caffeine and other stimulants specially after noon!
5️⃣ Avoid eating close to bedtime.
6️⃣ Keep your bedroom dark and cold! And limit the space to leisure activities. When doing work get out of the room!
7️⃣ Do 10-15 mins of a relaxation techniques (meditation, deep breathing, yoga stretches) before bedtime!

I’m obsessed with dark chocolate 🍫and thankfully cacao has a ton of Health Benefits when consumed in its purest form!

Cacao contains numerous essential minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, such as magnesium, iron, copper, and manganese.

Magnesium is required for muscle nerve function, energy production and blood pressure regulation.

Cocoa has a rich concentration of flavanols and flavanols has been shown to reduce age-related cognitive decline.

Eating cacao might help to keep your brain sharp as you age by protecting your arteries.

Cocoa products might reduce risk of cardiovascular disease along side your other nutritional and lifestyle prevention strategies.

Theobromine alkaloid found in cocoa has been shown to positively enhance mood and alertness.

The healthiest way to enjoy all of the wonderful benefits of cacao is to consume options that are made of 100% cacao such as the beans, nibs, and powder.

IBD patients are 3-4 times more likely to get thrombosis than people without it, specially when they have active inflammation.⁣

The process of thrombosis occurs when blood clots block veins or arteries. There's a chance of having a stroke or heart attack if this happens.🫀❤‍🩹⁣

Check out the post to see how it can affect different parts of your body.📲⁣

_______⁣

Here’s the 411 on colonoscopies! 💩💩⁣

I’m 👩🏼‍⚕️Dr.Vanessa Mendez ⁣
A triple board certified GI doc, gut health expert and lifestyle medicine specialist and I’m here to break it down for you! ⁣

🩺 A colonoscopy is an medical exam that lets us look closely look at the inside of your entire large intestine (colon and re**um) to find polyps or signs of cancer. ⁣

It let’s us diagnose and treat some conditions while we are in there 🎉🎉 and even prevent colon cancer!⁣

We use a Colonoscope: 👀⁣
This is a flexible, hollow, lighted tube (called a colonoscope) that has a tiny video camera on the end. ⁣

My favorite scopes are the pediatric colonoscopes which I use on my adult patients! They’re easy to maneuver and thinner than an adult colonoscope.⁣

This tube is eased inside the colon and sends pictures to a TV screen.⁣

The colonoscopy takes about 20-30 minutes. ⁣

Patients are usually given medicine to help you relax and sleep while it's done.⁣

‼The worst part of a colonoscopy: the prep⁣
👌🏻The best part: the deep sleep ⁣

YOU MIGHT NEED A COLONOSCOPY IF YOU MEET ONE OF THESE CRITERIA:⁣
✔45 and older ⁣
✔Family history of colon cancer or familial hereditary syndromes that increase your risk ⁣
✔Positive stool occult blood ⁣
✔Gastroenterologist is concerned about some of your Gl symptoms, like abdominal pain, diarrhea or bleeding⁣

Comment GUT ⬇ and I’ll add you to our newsletter where I walk you through all the tips and tricks to keep your gut healthy! ⁣

If you have unexplained or hard to treat digestive symptoms, you may be suffering from MCAS: Mast Cell Activation 💥💥⁣

SYMPTOMS 🫃⁣
Abdominal pain⁣
Itching and rash⁣
Anxiety and depression⁣
Skin irritation⁣
Diarrhea, vomiting⁣
Bone and muscle pain⁣
Uterine cramps⁣
Rapid heart rate, chest pain⁣

TRIGGERS 🚬⁣
Stress and anxiety⁣
Food or beverages⁣
Infectious diseases⁣
High intensity exercises⁣
Sleep deprivation⁣
Certain medications⁣

Mast cells 🧫 are blood cells that are part of your immune system. They help you fight infections, but they are also involved in allergic reactions.⁣

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a condition in which mast cells are inappropriately activated leading to inflammatory and allergic-type symptoms to everday triggers such as food, chemicals, stress and more.⁣

‼‼Patients with unexplained GI symptoms or hard to treat IBS and other symptoms are commonly found to suffer from MCAS. ⁣

The abnormal activated mast cells are directly related to visceral hypersensitivity, abdominal pain, diarrhea and other IBS symptoms.⁣
