Here are four ways that the Black Mamas Matter Alliance calls on policymakers to invest in and honor Black women and birthing people’s leadership:
Compile, archive, and showcase global histories and traditions of Black midwifery and birth work, reproductive justice activism, and community care models.

Develop national standards for maternal, sexual, and reproductive health that are based on the traditions, teachings, and practices of the Black maternal, reproductive, and perinatal workforce.

Develop curricula that infuse Black feminist frameworks and culturally congruent teachings and practices

Apply Black feminist praxes to policy and program development, implementation, and analysis at every level of government.

Here are four ways that the Black Mamas Matter Alliance calls on policymakers to invest in and honor Black women and birthing people’s leadership:
Enact the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act.

Invest heavily and sustainably in Black-led and centered, community-based organizations that work to advance Black maternal health.

Prioritize birth and reproductive justice informed, Black women and birthing people (including pregnant and parenting youth, and those from LGBTQIA+, low-income, disabled, and other underrepresented Black communities) for leadership, decision making, and advising positions

Invest in Black arts, education, cultural, and spiritual activities, celebrations, and institutions, both domestically and globally.

Doulas are non-medical professionals trained to support families throughout their reproductive journey. So, what’s the difference between a birth, postpartum, and full-spectrum doula?

Birth Doulas - provide physical and emotional support to birthing people before, during, and after childbirth. They help clients navigate the birthing process and advocate for their wishes and values.

Postpartum Doulas - support parents and newborns during the "fourth trimester," which is the 12 weeks following birth. They may help with newborn care, light housework, and emotional support for the parents.

Full Spectrum Doulas - offer physical, emotional, and informational support across the spectrum of reproductive health experiences. This includes preconception, birth, adoption, abortion, and miscarriage.
