🔔 Tech Notice from Petzl

Petzl recently released a technical notice regarding the use of the I’D® S self-braking descender for accompanied descent rescues.

👉 The key takeaway:
The I’D® S is designed for a maximum combined load of 200 kg. Exceeding this limit, especially in real-world conditions like long descents or wet/dirty ropes, may affect descent control.

For situations requiring heavier loads or complex rescues, Petzl recommends developing alternative rescue strategies.

At Tower Safety, we appreciate Petzl’s continued transparency and dedication to climber safety. It’s reminders like this that help us all refine our training, review rescue plans, and stay within safe parameters.

📎 Read the full technical notice here:
https://www.petzl.com/INT/en/Professional/Accompanied-descent-rescue-with-the-I-D?ProductName=I-D-S

The I’D S can be used to control a two-person descent, up to a maximum load of 200 kg. The recommended descent speed must not exceed 0.5 m/s. To improve control, using an extra-friction solution is essential.
