"Heavenly mother, filled with God's grace, pray for us today and all days, that we may strive to be trusting, patient and faithful, as you were, so that we may one day join you and all saints in heaven. In Jesus's name we pray. Amen."

The word epiphany is not specific to Christianity, as Zeus’s alias, Epiphanes, can attest. It comes from the Greek epiphaneia, meaning “manifestation.” How is Three Kings Day celebrated? Find out! Almanac.com/Fact/Epiphany

The Krampus (meaning dead one or clawed) is a traditional companion of Saint Nicholas. Appearing as a devil, demon or goat-like monster, Krampus exists among other not-so-nice companions of St. Nick who enact punishment on naughty children. Some others include Black Peter - who might bake kids into cookies - and Father Whipper - the cannibalistic butcher. On the eve before St. Nicolas Day - called Krampusnacht or Krampus Night in German - Krampus travels the land under the command of St. Nicolas. While good children are rewarded by St. Nick with sweets, toys and exotic fruits, misbehaved children are placed in a sack and hit with birch twigs by the horned and terrifying Krampus.
