Omaha local legend and longtime Home Instead friend Mary Maxwell brought her signature wit to our 2009 Convention—confusing the Archbishop for her ride, entering the car wash backwards, and rocking mismatched earrings like a pro. We absolutely LOVE her. 💚😂

When “let’s talk” feels like too much, start small.
In this episode of Caregiver Chats, Dr. Lakelyn sits down with Amy Friesen, eldercare expert and author of Breadcrumbs, to explore why families avoid planning conversations—and how to gently start them.
Amy shares why it's rarely a one-time talk, how professionals can help ease tension, and why sometimes the message lands better when it doesn’t come from you.
What if the best medicine for aging well... is friendship? 💚
David Troxel shares how a Home Instead Care Pro became a lifeline for his dad—not just helping around the house, but watching golf, cooking together, and bringing joy back into the day.
Because the truth is, the brain loves company. And sometimes, a little companionship can change everything.

When Thao walks into the room, a veteran with advanced Parkinson’s — mostly nonverbal — lights up and says, “There’s my angel.”
Thao Nguyen, a Care Pro with Home Instead, doesn’t just show up. She brings music. She brings home-cooked Vietnamese meals. She brings peace of mind.
Originally from Vietnam, Thao cared for her grandmother and extended family from a young age. That lifelong devotion to elders followed her to the U.S., where a neighbor introduced her to caregiving.
One family loved her cooking so much, they stocked their pantry just so Thao could prepare her signature dishes. Another client requested her by name each week, just to hear her music in the hall.
“I treat them like my own parents,” Thao says. “I love them so much.”
Thank you, Thao, for reminding us that exceptional caregiving isn’t just noticed.
Let this story be a reminder: great care creates connection that lasts.

Our story began like many of yours: with family. We witnessed our family aging. First grandparents, then parents. We have many happy memories of holidays at home and summers spent in gardens, side by side with our grandparents and parents, in their kitchens cooking and baking, enjoying the woods and the outdoors, and sitting by a fire in the winter, or fishing in the stream behind their home. But the Earth keeps turning, our worlds keep changing and time marches on. Those happy times became memories, then memories gave way to distant stories as declines in health changed how we interact. The following years meant grandparents leaving their homes, moving in with family to help with daily living, and eventually moving to assisted living communities or passing from our presence.
We witnessed new challenges to our family and loved one’s health, mobility, and cognition. We also saw the importance of having them at home, near family, or in their own homes where they wanted to be. We also saw the challenges presented by having them far away or in our homes. We had the beautiful experience of assisting in their care, which made our close bonds so much closer in ways we could not imagine happening otherwise. But we also saw the effects on our families, the long journeys to visit, the late nights spent caring, the scheduling conflicts, the need for outside assistance and the emotional and physical toll.
Our circumstances may be different from yours, but we have most likely felt many similar feelings. We’ve been there before and that’s why we’re here now. Abby and I were looking for something different. We wanted to provide a service that we could feel good about, where we were making a difference in the lives of people, whether client, family, or the caregivers we employ to support them. Our dear family friends have been involved with Home Instead Senior Care for more than a decade. We saw the difference they were making in the lives of the people in their community and when the opportunity to serve the north valley of the sun came our way, we knew this was the right move for us.
You may want to keep your loved ones engaged in more than sitting in front of the television. You may want to help your mother, father, grandparent or spouse live life to the fullest. Maybe you need some help for a while after a hip replacement, knee, or shoulder surgery. Maybe you need some help to fill in the gaps between family members and hospice visits. Our maybe you need help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To find out how we can help give us a call today at 602.362.3317. We’re your family when family isn’t there because to us, it’s personal.
