This is a very relevant approach towards explaining the similarities in diagnosis within the developmental disorders. Take a look at this information
✅From the original post:
More than one diagnosis is not unusual and can present a lot of challenges to the person and their family.
In fact, there is an astounding amount of overlap between many neurodevelopmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).
〰️Autism and SPD: there is up to an 88% overlap.
(For a person with Autism, there’s an 88% of chance that one also has SPD.)
〰️Autism and ADHD: there is up to a 60% overlap - which goes both ways.
〰️Autism and Anxiety (including GAD): there is up to an 80% chance of overlap.
〰️ADHD and SPD: there is up to a 60% overlap.
〰️ADHD and GAD: there is a 23% overlap
As clinicians, educators, and parents, understanding this and being able to identify the existence of a second diagnosis (or if there is not) can lead to better, more effective treatment for the children.
