Insomnia Can Make Knee Pain Worse

While lack of sleep might not directly cause knee pain, there is a correlation between sleep and the perception of pain. Pain changes the way our nervous system works, and that can cause a person to become more or hypersensitive to pain. When you add a knee injury or arthritis into this scenario, it can cause a windmill effect, making it harder for the patient to sleep, resulting in more pain experienced, and not enough time for the body to recover properly.

You Can Get Knee Pain if You’re Not Active Enough

Sedentary lifestyles are a big risk factor for Americans, not to mention the effects of age. Over time, wear and tear of the knee joint can cause stiffness and inflammation. Obesity amongst younger adults is increasingly becoming another significant factor in the equation for knee pain.

Genicular artery embolization (G*E), or embolization of the knee, is a novel minimally-invasive procedure providing immediate and long term pain relief for patients with osteoarthritis (OA), by reducing the blood flow to the lining of the knee, known as the synovium.

It is performed by an Interventional Radiologist (IR), who is a specialist physician that uses X-rays and other imaging modalities to see in the body and treat diseases without surgery.

3 benefits of genicular artery embolization.

1. It only takes 1-2 hours to complete the procedure.
2. It's minimally invasive.
3. Gives long term pain relief.

When was the first time you felt knee pain?

We are introducing a new procedure called G*E, or Genicular Artery Embolization, is a minimally invasive procedure to reduce pain in the knee in patients with Osteoarthritis.

G*E is a minimally invasive procedure. What happens is when you have pain and inflammation in your knee, your body tries to create new pathways and blood flow to that area. We put a IV in your hip area. Through that IV we put catheters down to your knee and put tiny embolization particles in the area where there is that blood flow. The particles knock out the bad blood flow, but doesn't hurt your regular blood flow down your leg. Over the next few days, weeks or even month, those pathways are shut down and your pain, swelling inflammation go down.

Benefits of genicular artery embolization.
1, Long-lasting Results
G*E has a 78% success rate in relieving knee pain for 2 to 3 years or longer.
2. Non-surgical
This non-surgical option provides long-lasting results. The recovery period following the procedure is relatively quick since there are incisions or stitches that will need to heal.
3. Highly effective in reducing pain
In the Okuno study mentioned before, 86% of the patients in the study reported that their pain was reduced by more than 50% within 6 months of having the procedure. These patients were able to reduce or stop their pain medication use at the 6-month mark as well due to the success of the procedure.

What Are The Causes Of Sudden Knee Pain?
1. ACL Injuries: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are often sports injuries involving jumping or sudden changes in direction. These injuries typically cause instability or prevent the knee from bearing weight.

2. Collateral ligament injuries: These injuries often occur while playing contact sports.

3. Torn meniscus: A tackle, twist, aging, or a form of arthritis can damage your knee’s meniscus. You may feel your knee lock or have discomfort walking up and downstairs.

Wearing the wrong shoes can damage them.

Wearing shoes that are worn out or that fail to offer adequate support can increase pressure on the knees. Knowing which shoes would work best for you depends on your specific circumstances — do you have arthritis? Have you had knee replacement surgery? Does your job require you to be on your feet all day? Are you a long-distance runner? If any of these circumstances apply to you, talk to your doctor about which types of shoes would suit you best.
