Do you know how we came across Sculptra in the aesthetic/wellness world?

Nerd Moment!!!

Sculptra did not start as an aesthetic filler. The underlying material, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), had already been used for years in medicine — especially in dissolvable stitches and orthopedic/dental fixation materials — before physicians later developed it into an injectable treatment for facial volume loss and collagen stimulation.

Sculptra, the injectable product, not just "the material PLLA", entered aesthetics through reconstructive use first, not purely cosmetic use. The product was first FDA-approved in August 2004 to restore facial lipoatrophy in people with HIV — meaning volume loss in the face that could happen with HIV and some older HIV treatments. Clinicians saw that PLLA did more than just occupy space: it stimulated a gradual collagen response and improved facial structure over time.

From there, physicians realized that the same collagen-stimulating effect could be used beyond reconstructive correction and adapted for aesthetic facial rejuvenation. That led to FDA approval of Sculptra Aesthetic in July 2009 for nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles. More recently, it also received approval for fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek region in 2023.
