Some of our amazing CRNAs at Abrazo West Campus. Pictured here are Jane Krause, Chief CRNA Crystal Clark, and Saira Ramsammy.

Being a level 1 trauma center, Abrazo West brings in a diverse array of cases including many high acuity cases. For a significant portion of GAS providers, this is an important factor in their decision to work at Abrazo West. Lucas Kachurick, a CRNA at West says: "I love working at West because of the diverse case mix at varying levels of illness. When I interviewed, I was drawn to the acuity. The ability to handle strokes, traumas, and other critically ill patients was something I required in employment."

Another Abrazo West CRNA, Phillip Bodner, agrees: "The fast-paced environment keeps my skills sharp, and I appreciate the wide variety of cases that allow me to continue growing professionally."

GAS is lucky to have the extremely talented individuals working at Abrazo West Campus, and at our other sites across the valley!

In a new article published this month in Anesthesiology News, Dr. Nathaniel Smilowitz shared new guidelines to help estimate cardiac risk from non-cardiac procedures. The article states:

Patients who need emergency surgery should proceed, Smilowitz said, while management of those who have known cardiovascular conditions, such as heart failure or unstable arrhythmias, should be done by a multidisciplinary team.

To estimate perioperative risk in patients without known heart disease, it is recommended using a validated risk calculator, such as the Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI) or Universal NSQIP Perioperative MI and Cardiac Arrest Risk Calculator.

Next, according to Smilowitz, consider any risk modifiers that would not be detected by calculators, including severe valvular heart disease, severe pulmonary hypertension, elevated-risk congenital heart disease, prior coronary stents or bypass surgery, recent stroke, pacemaker or frailty.

“It doesn’t mean that if you have these things, you are necessarily high risk,” he said, “but it does require you to think about that patient differently than somebody who has no cardiac history.” A person with a pacemaker “may do perfectly well” in the OR, but you may need to change the device settings ahead of time.

Lucas Kachurick is one of GAS's great providers at Abrazo West Campus. Originally from Pittsburgh, he attended CRNA school at Barry University in Miami Florida. When asked about why he became a CRNA he answered: "I love a challenge and becoming a CRNA is the highest summit in the nursing profession. The autonomy, the knowledge, the ability to greatly impact lives while having an engaging skill was the biggest draw to CRNA."

The best piece of anesthesia care advice he's heard is "Treat your patients as humans. Interact and connect during your preop assessment, that's what they'll remember most."

Finally, he said about the difference between a good anesthesia provider and a great provider is: "The never-ending urge to improve, learn, and grow. Also, anesthesia is a humbling profession...vigilance is key."

Thank you Lucas for being an amazing part of the GAS team!

More highlights from GAS Home Team providers attending Phoenix Suns games and Concerts at the PHX arena.

These suite tickets were a perk we got for all GAS Home Team providers at the beginning of the year.

For those providers who went, should we consider getting these tickets again? What other kinds of perks would be cool to get as a GAS Home Team provider?
