Dr. Vanessa Ruiz I am a Naturopathic Doctor and focus on natural based therapies to address mental health. I saw it as a way to access more tools for my patients.

My passion is mental health and my patients having an experience of being heard and cared for. My personal goal as a clinician is that my patients gain access to new coping skills, develop mastery in their own self-care and empowerment. My education includes a degree in biology and training in research at Skidmore College. While research satisfied my academic pursuits, I wanted to work in a clinic

al setting and received my Bachelor's degree in Nursing at Stony Brook University in New York. I worked for several years in various areas: sub-acute rehabilitation, case management and even as a travel nurse in the emergency ward of Mary Health of Africa Hospital in Cameroon, Africa. Following a personal health crisis, I discovered natural medicine and was intrigued. I received my doctorate at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine where I have been trained in classical homeopathy, focusing on mental health. In addition to my formal education, I've been certified as a Yoga Teacher, trained in Thai Massage, Reiki, Buteyko Breathing Therapy and Mayan Uterine Massage.

Trauma is a part of life. It's not the event that causes PTSD, but the way it affects a person's mind and body. Are you looking for ways to help your child overcome traumas of life? Consider these protective factors:

Social Support and Consistent Caregiving: this doesn't have to be ONE person, it can be several attachment figures. What is most important is the consistency of an attachment figure during times of stress.
Healthy whole foods diet: this can help reduce neuroinflammation, which is a feature in complex PTSD. This also helps foster a diverse gut bacteria, which impact healthy brain development.
Reduced exposure to stress: children are meant to have low exposure to cortisol, since it can trigger "aging" and impaired brain development. It can also sensitize them to become more sensitive to cortisol, which is a key feature in complex PTSD.
Sufficient Play time and movement. Children learn through interacting with their environment. Play helps raise curiosity, tone dopamine reward pathways (often impaired in complex PTSD), which can help in resiliency towards PTSD. Movement can help children with emotional regulation, as well as releasing endorphins, the feel good chemicals of the body.
If you got some value in this, please like, follow and share to help others heal. 🤍✨

Have you ever pondered the factors that contribute to one's susceptibility to PTSD? What sets apart those who are able to overcome post-traumatic stress from those who are plagued by its lasting effects?

There are various methods to bolster resiliency, and they go beyond mere positive thinking or telling someone to toughen up.

1. Enhanced Social Support- Social support helps buffer against PTSD. Social interactions also help to raise oxytocin, which can be protective in PTSD.

2. Beneficial omega 3 fatty acids in the diet DURING early development AND during stressors- Omega 3 fatty acids are important in being anti-inflammatory, which counteracts high inflammation that occurs in PTSD. Omega 3 also helps with neuronal development as well as neuronal signaling, which can be impaired in PTSD.

3. Diet high in anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory foods during the time of stress- Impaired inflammation regulation occurs in PTSD, which can mean higher levels of oxidative stress (aging). To offset these effects, a diet high in anti-oxidants and anti inflammatory foods

4. Healthy gut bacteria before and during traumatic stressors- Studies have shown that the gut bacteria changes from healthy bacteria towards more disease causing bacteria. During and after a traumatic stressor, it's important to take pre and probiotics, which help to regulate unhealthy bacteria as well as regulate inflammation.

5. High heart rate variability- Heart rate variability is a measure of how your body is tolerating stress. The lower the heart rate variability, the more susceptible you are to PTSD. The quickest way to boost your HRV? Breathing on a count of 5 while exhaling, and a count of 5 inhaling.
