Feeling nervous about starting group therapy is normal. It's one of the most common things we hear from adults before they start IOP.

We recommend a few things make the first day easier.

👉 Ask to look through the group curriculum beforehand.
👉 Have your therapist walk you through what a typical session looks like.
👉 See the therapy space before you start.
👉 Arrive early enough to park, use the restroom, and get comfortable before the session begins.

For most people the nervousness is gone after the first session or two. They're learning skills that actually help, getting to know the people in the room, and settling into how it all works.

You don't have to be a perfect parent to be a good one.

Parents sometimes lose patience, struggle to find the right words with their child, or have a hard time balancing independence with guidance. That's normal. Perfection isn't on the list of what research ties to kids doing better emotionally.

What is on that list is more concrete than most people expect:

Eating dinner together regularly, being nurturing and responsive to where your kid actually is, staying connected as a family, keeping conflict with your partner low, staying consistently involved in their life, and setting clear limits while letting them develop on their own terms safely.

Kids who have those things tend to show lower rates of depression and anxiety, and those effects follow them for decades.

What's one thing on that list you feel like you're doing well right now?

Most people picture depression as someone who can't get out of bed and cries all day.

But that's not how it shows up for a lot of people.

It can look like snapping at your partner, ignoring texts, eating more than usual or nothing at all, or just moving through your day completely on autopilot.

The version of depression that goes unrecognized the longest is the one that doesn't look like sadness at all.

Does this resonate with your experience or someone you know?

If in-person care doesn't work for your life right now, virtual IOP might be the answer.

Virtual intensive outpatient programs at Transitions Counseling tend to be popular with:

👍Single parents
👍Caregivers
👍People with shift work schedules
👍Adults that live more than 30-40 min from a clinic
👍People with limited access to transportation

Transitions offers virtual and in-person accredited IOPs. Our clinicians live, work, and are licensed in the same communities our clients call home.

A lot of people stop mental health treatment when they start feeling better, thinking the hard part is behind them.

But feeling better is often what progress looks like, not the end of it.

Stopping too early is one of the most common reasons people relapse and find themselves struggling again.

At Transitions, your therapy and psychiatry team tracks your progress, monitors your treatment plan goals, and helps you know when you're ready to reduce or end treatment.

A study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that about 80% of people will receive treatment for a mental health condition during their lifetime.

That's 4 out of every 5 people and a much higher number than earlier research had suggested.

It means that needing support isn't rare. It means most people, at some point, will find themselves looking for help. What does knowing that change for you?

Imposter syndrome is a psychological experience marked by:

1️⃣Persistent self-doubt
2️⃣A deep sense that you don't belong
3️⃣An inability to internalize your own achievements
..even when the proof of your competence is right in front of you.

You chalk up every win to luck, timing, or other people not seeing clearly yet. And somewhere underneath it all, there's a quiet dread that one day someone will "figure you out."

Imposter syndrome tends to show up alongside anxiety and depression. Over time it can lead to burnout, loneliness, and low self-esteem.

It's more common than most people realize, and not everyone who experiences it needs professional help. But if it's affecting your work, your school, your relationships, your sleep, or how you're eating, it's time to seek help.

Therapy helps, but your brain is running on whatever you gave it yesterday:

👉 How much you slept.
👉 Whether you ate.
👉 If you moved your body.
👉 Whether you talked to another human being.

Those aren't lifestyle suggestions; they are the biological conditions your nervous system needs to regulate itself, and when they're missing or inconsistent, they can quietly drive anxiety, low mood, and the feeling that something is just off.

You don't need a diagnosis to start taking them seriously. Small steps, done consistently, matter whether you're in crisis or just trying to feel more like yourself.

"I'm fine" is not a mental health plan.

If you're lying awake at 2am, snapping at people you love, avoiding things that used to feel easy, or replaying something over and over that you can't seem to shake, that's not fine. That's anxiety, depression, or trauma doing exactly what it does when it goes untreated. The moment it starts affecting your sleep, your relationships, your ability to get through a normal day, that's the moment it's worth talking to someone. Individual therapy gives you a real plan, with a real person, built around what's actually going on with you.

To get the most out of therapy, start here:

1️⃣ Be honest. Your therapist is there to help you, not judge you. The more honest you are about how you're feeling, the better they can actually help.
2️⃣ Let your therapist know what your goals are. It's okay if you're not totally sure. Your therapist can help you figure it out.
3️⃣ Do the stuff they ask outside of sessions. Actually doing it makes a big difference, kind of like doing homework so you don't fall behind.
4️⃣ Keep showing up, even when you don't feel like it. This is one of the most important parts of therapy. Skipping makes it harder to make progress.
5️⃣ Be patient with yourself. You're not going to feel better after one session. Even small progress counts.
6️⃣ Try using what you learn in real life. The tools your therapist gives you are meant to help outside of the session too.
7️⃣ Celebrate your successes. Making changes takes guts. Give yourself credit.

Most people who seek mental health care wait longer than they need to. By the time they call, it's already affecting their relationships, their work, and the things they used to enjoy. Asking for help means you've acknowledged that things are not where they should be and decided to do something about it. That first step is hard and taking it is courageous. And the sooner you take it, the sooner things start to look different.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) gives teens a concrete set of skills for the things that are actually derailing them such as how to tolerate distress without making it worse, how to regulate emotions that feel completely out of control, how to communicate without everything turning into a fight. In a teen intensive outpatient program, they practice those skills in a group setting, which means they're getting real feedback, hearing how other teens apply the same tools, and building the kind of repetition that makes it stick before the next hard moment hits.
