This is SO true!!!! We don’t always know why we feel the way we do, we just feel it. It’s important not to judge the feeling. Notice it, sit with it and then do something to help soothe the feeling. Be the adult the child you needed. 💕

Trauma memories hold different properties compared to day to day, ordinary memories.

This is due to the nature of trauma - where it overwhelms our capacity to cope and our amazing brains go into survival mode.

Part of PTSD/ trauma is that we sometimes struggle to remember details of the event. This is because during a trauma, we are placed in a highly fearful situation, dissociation can occur & this leads to changes in the way our memories are encoded. Our brains’s hippocampus, which is in charge of encoding experiences into short-term memory & stores them later into long-term memories becomes flooded by fear and as a result memories become fragmented and without a time stamp.

Which can then lead to lapses in the memory following the event, the memory being foggy and jumbled up. It’s not uncommon for survivors to question whether the trauma happened - it feels like a blur.

Furthermore trauma is stored as implicit memories. meaning we often don’t have language for it, we feel it in our bodies. These implicit memories are recalled unconsciously & are often a procedural memory, (ie a remembered process but with no narrative). E.g an implicit memory is at play when we ride a bike. We don’t have to remind ourselves how to ride a bike, we just use our body and ride.

And implicit memories are often many of the childhood memories that we hold because the brain is not developed enough to encode them.

What are your thoughts? 💜
