Invisible disabilities are conditions that aren't immediately noticeable but can still significantly impact daily life. They include things like chronic pain, mental health conditions, learning differences, and more.

About 10% of Americans live with an invisible disability, meaning it's more common to meet someone with an unseen disability than you might think!

For those living with invisible disabilities, it can be hard to get the accommodation and support they need. Because their challenges aren’t always visible, their disabilities are sometimes misunderstood or not taken seriously. But just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

This week is Invisible Disabilities Week. Take a minute to share this post to remind others that not all disabilities are visible and that inclusion matters.

The Arc of Arizona is aware of the Governor’s directive to the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) to implement an exception process within the new standardized assessment tool, as well as the Department of Economic Security’s decision to delay reductions in service hours for Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) members. These steps temporarily halt reductions while AHCCCS develops a process for families to request extraordinary-care reviews. The Arc of Arizona will continue to closely monitor these developments, including the emergency rulemaking process and upcoming public comment period. People with disabilities experience higher rates of trauma, abuse, and isolation—but too often, they don’t get the mental health care they need.

That's why, with support from the United Health Foundation, we are training caregivers, health professionals, and community members in Mental Health First Aid so more people can recognize and respond early. On World Mental Health Day, let’s recognize that the mental health of people with disabilities matters just as much as anyone else’s. We can, and must, do better.

Today is World Mental Health Day

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health. Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential. Whether it’s taking a walk, setting healthy boundaries, connecting with others, or simply pausing to breathe, small steps can make a big difference.

At The Arc of Arizona, we encourage everyone—self-advocates, caregivers, and community members—to take time today to recharge, reflect, and reach out for support if needed.
Because when we care for ourselves, we’re stronger together.

People with disabilities are more likely to experience bullying, but it isn’t always obvious. It can look like assumptions or being excluded or treated unfairly. It can happen in workplaces, communities, or online. Today is World Day of Bullying Prevention, which means more than just awareness. It means taking action. Call out harmful behavior, include people in conversations, and help us to spread the word: people with disabilities deserve to be seen and respected for who they are.
